HTC One Google Edition Pros/Cons/Thoughts Discussion

Questions.......questions.......questions about this.........This was mentioned is Phil Nickinson's AC article today, but I don't understand what it means. Do you (or anybody) know what this means? You won't get HSPA+ speed on Tmobile's network with this phone, or it will be limited HSPA+ speed? And why would there be no AWS support for HTC One GE, but there will be AWS support for GS4 GE?

No HSPA+ unless you're in a refarmed market. The reason for the differences between the S4 and One are related to the radios. The S4 has different combinations than the one does.

Not sure if what mentioned my boy told me the Google Edition will lose the IR Remote?

Not really interested but if I was and this is true, I don't think I cn drop $600.
Yup, it'll lose the IR Remote and HTC Camera functions (ex.Zoe). Button configurations and Beats Audio will remain the same.

Remember that rumor about Nexus phones from every manufacturer? These aren't Nexus phones but close enough.

Last years Rumored "Nexus Certified Program" turned into the "Google Edition"

This is a move in the right direction for giving customers a choice. To all of the people who are worried about a less than stellar experience on a Google Experience vs full blown Sense version of the phone I say this, do you really think HTC would allow a sub par version of their flagship to come to market?
HTC is on the ropes and needs the One to be a Hit. I think they have one and the Google experience phone will be every bit as good as the Sense version.

Other than keeping unlimited data, why not buy the device on contract with Sense. I would gather within a week of release of this Google Edition developers will have this ROM available to flash on your device, saving you $400.

Not for those looking for an HTC experience out of the box.

Will it loose the ir remote or just the software? There are other remote apps.

Probably everything. I doubt Google would allow the necessary drivers to be included. (But this would be a hacker friendly device, so it could be readded by the mod community)

That sucks that it would lose the IR Remote.. Would it just be HTC's version of the remote but keep the blaster so you could get another remote app from the play store?

The blaster is likely proprietary to HTC so the software would be gone. If they decide to leave the hardware intact, which I can see happening, then the developer community will come up with their own solutions to access this feature.

I'm thinking about the HTC One-Google Edition. I don't like Sense for anything but the flip clock, and I'll get over that. The price is the same for me since I'm on unsubsidized plans with T-Mobile and not upgrade eligible with AT&T.

My question is will the FM radio be available on the HTC One-Google Edition?

Just like everything else, it's probably true the the hardware will be intact and you'll need to find your own software.

I see a lot of comments along the lines of "just get the one from AT&T, then root it and run AOSP - It is the cheaper option". I don't really see that as being totally true. People who have their contract up for renewal are not the only people with interest in this phone. I am not up on my contract for at least 4-5 months but would like to get the One so I can be back in the world of LTE. I have had a "vanilla" Android device since the Nexus 1 (which was replaced by the Galaxy Nexus, then the Nexus 4). I have also used my upgrades with AT&T to get other carrier Android phones along the way (HTC Inspire {yes, that nightmare of a phone} and the HTC OneX. They were both fine, I just prefer a stock device to start from. I have Rooted, I have used many ROMS, I liked CM the best, but only because it was so much like stock.

So the way I look at it, if you are interested in a stock device and have to pay full price anyway what is the big deal? I don't want to root, void a warranty and spend 60 hours of my life reading forums to make sure I don't brick my device before I do it. I for one am excited to get the HTC ONE (and before that was announced was seriously considering the S4) and think the idea of Google Experience phones are great. If nothing else it shows me that Google is listening and knows there are lots of us out there that love the idea of great hardware with a bare bones Android OS to modify however we like.

I think it's good for the smart phone industry and good for the consumers to have variety, and now you arent limited to the nexus line for a stock android experience. However, I feel like putting stock android on phones that are so feature rich is a bit of a waste. The s4 will lose most of its features and gestures that are Touchwiz dependent, and the ONE will lose Zoes/ Picture Highlights, and will most likely suffer in the camera department without it's sense counterparts. I see these phones being marketed more towards developers opposed to people who really want the Vanilla android experience. For a lesser price, you could get a carrier version, unlock and root, and flash AOSP.

I have been doing the root and flash bit for several years and it is getting old. My device has caused multiple developers to quit supporting all Exynos devices because of the headache thfe lousy support from Samsung caused. The developer community is great but the time I have spend on beta testing (or pre-alpha testing) features I would love to skip on my next device. I would really like a phone that works, runs stock and gets quick updates, preferably at a decent price.

S4 owner here who wants to keep my S4 the way it is. Also a Nexus 4 owner who has not touched my Nexus 4 since getting my S4. Screen, 32GB, SD card, LTE, Better camera are reasons...I see the HTC One GE as a viable option for all but the SD card. I know nothing about HTC or sense so It would be just like a kick **** Nexus to me with nothing sense related to compare it to...

I will wait to see the reviews but I have my $600 ready and hiding it fro my wife lol!

No IR function or Zoe are a killer to me but I think this is great for people who don't much care for Sense or are worried about update times.

What is up with Google wallet not being in the HTC one but on the s4? Both of these phones have some drawbacks. I will wait for real world reviews before deciding.

I think this shows the OEMS are putting out some great devices!

I noticed that and was dismayed by this, too. I'm hoping that a download from the Play Store will still give a fully functioning Google Wallet app, though.
