HTC ONE - HUGE MEMORY HOG. Phone itself using 1.6GIGS RAM (of 1.7).

Actually I Did.. I did 3 times.. Wirelesswave did as well. And so this the sales rep at the Bell store.. And I did again during the instructions from Bell technical support.

ugh? so you never tried restarting your phone to solve the issue before?

so i suspect you haven't restarted your phone once in 6 months either?

anyhow happy for you but if you really value your information you should get used to using cloud services to sync and backup your data. sooner or later you might have to reset the phone or you never know when misfortune might strike and it breaks down (or stolen).

phones are more fragile, exposed to more risk and in some cases stressed more than a computer during day to day usage.

Those last two posts look like they went up simultaneously, so it's clear that the OP did in fact try rebooting.:)

There's probably some app you've installed that's misbehaving periodically. Keep an eye out for more misbehavior, and note carefully what you were doing if and when it recurs. If it seems associated with a particular app, try uninstalling or disabling it.

I don't have an HTC One but my wife had the HTC One V which is not much like the full One but it had a setting called "Fastboot" and when set on the phone never really reboots it just warm boots. If this setting is on your HTC One maybe turn it off. I believe its a Sense thing.

My phone has always been on FASTboot and I honestly NEVER SHUTDOWN the phone; only press the power off to shut off the screen. I figured that was shutting it off. And that would be for MONTHS now. I never SHUT it down because I obviously need it on so I can continue to get calls, messages, etc..

Oh, I see. As you probably know already, tapping the Power button once only turns off the screen and puts the phone to sleep, but doesn't power off. A true reboot is done by powering completely off, then powering on again. Some people advocate a reboot once a week or so, but it really just depends on how your device is behaving.

maybe try this App too - but you will only be treating the symptom and not curing the problem -

[Memory Boost] - Increase memory and speed up your device
Tasks running in the background not only occupy system RAM, but also waste your battery life. Memory Boost can stop other apps that are running in the background and free up more RAM to speed up your Android device. This includes a shortcut called "1 Tap Boost", easily accessible from your home screen. Running Android apps and play games faster ever than before!

Are you having problems that specifically mention memory, or do you just not like the high number?

The OS should free up memory when needed, and may simply be using a lot of memory for cache, etc. I don't know what my memory usage is, but I will check...

If you read his post you would see he mentioned the problems he is having which seem to be due to lack of ram.....

The key is "seem"

However, the known aspects were that he was having problems with apps crashing, and his memory usage was high. I was trying to see whether we could determine whether it was the egg or the chicken that came first. There was nothing in what was said to indicate whether the high utilization was the problem as opposed to the high utilization being another symptom of the root problem other than a few hypotheses.

He's had the phone six months and never power cycled it? That's got to be a record of some kind at least.
