HTC One M7 turned itself off and won't turn on again, how can I fix it?

HTC One M7 turned itself off and wont turn on again

I was using my phone like usual and I turned the screen off. I turned it back on because I received a notification but it was kind of lagging and then the screen turned black while the home and back button were flashing for about 10 seconds before completely stopping. I don't think it overheated as I didn't feel it was getting abnormally hot. The battery was on like 20% so I thought it was something to do with that so I tried putting my phone on charge but the red LED light wouldn't turn on like it usually does. I tried holding the power button - held it for probably 2 minutes straight and no response. I then tried the volume buttons and the power button at he same time but still no effect. What's wrong with it and what do I do? Please help.. Thanks

It could be battery failure, or the failure of some internal component.

Ok, so how would I find out whether it's the battery or if it's something else?
