Well, I finally had a chance to take some photos outside with the M8, and am really disappointed. The sun is out and it's incredibly bright. Despite that, there is noise in the blue sky, and the image in general looks murky. There is snow on the ground, and a deep blue sky, so the dynamic range probably can't be handled by the 4mp sensor. Exposure also seems to be all over the place unless I lock the exposure myself. I wanted this camera to be more than the sum of its parts, but that doesn't seem to be the case. I'm torn, because I love all the other aspects of this phone. The hardware design is fantastic, the screen is excellent, and the music output via the headphone jack is amongst the best. So not sure yet whether I'll keep this or not.
Ironically, the front camera is better than the back ultrapixel camera, as you can see by the attached images.
Edit: Looking at the landscape shot, I think it's underexposing because of the snow. Cameras try to expose for 18% gray, so a scene with snow needs to be overexposed by one or two stops when taking the shot, in order to get the correct exposure. I'm going to try to retake that shot shortly, adding a stop of extra exposure to see if that makes it better.

Thank you for confirming this fact. I guess I'll be waiting for something better instead - perhaps the next One or even next Moto X (though I highly doubt Motorola cares about that). A rear camera is important to me - I don't need to use it to force-feed bathroom selfies to my temporary "friends" through Twitter/Snapchat, I'd like to take interesting photos which can be enjoyed by people of different genders and generations, even when viewed full-screen on larger, properly calibrated monitors. I already suffered through one phone (Moto X) with a barely useful camera (even though this phone is awesome in most other aspects) and don't want to repeat the experience or try and mess with manual settings for each photo and do some post-processing on PC (I prefer to have a camera which can take GOOD pictures most of the time in good lighting conditions in "auto" mode). I also don't want to carry my large P&S camera everywhere (which is pretty bulky and takes some time to remove from its bag and turn it on) anymore and try to remember to always keep its (proprietary) battery charged.

I almost bought this on opening day, but waited to see about the camera. I had an m7 and loved it, but got a used iphone 5 in order to get the jawbone up24, cause I am doing a fitness thing (halfway to my goal!) and I wanted more storage (64) to store music and audios since my gym gets no signal (so no cloud). The up24 didn't work with the one for bluetooth. The iphone is ok, but I am bored of it. Really was excited to get the m8 so I could be back on android, but have also been looking at similar pics I took on the m7 of the dogs or scenery, and compare to similar shots from the iphone. Such a difference, especially as you zoom in. I had a day at the park with a friend and their kids, and had taken some shots with my M7, from a distance, and my shots were awful as we had to zoom (kids were far away) vs a friends shots with their iphone. After comparing shots, I knew the only way I could go back to htc was if they put in a better camera. I keep trying to justify buying the phone, but camera is too important to me.
Seems like there is no killer phone. Samsung has touchwiz, which I think is so ugly to use, but great hardware (although my s3 always had crap gps). Htc has gorgeous phones and software (I love the clean look of sense), but a crap camera. My apple is just kinda boring, but does everything reasonably well, I just think of it as being a bit bland but functions well. I was so hoping htc would do a good shooter so I could come back, but i guess not. Why htc? I know many don't care about the camera, but I know a lot or people who doz, and do blow up pics for framing. Perhaps next year....I just wish someome would make a gorgeous and elegant htc one style device, with a good camera.

Wow
They removed it. It said 16MP when you go to their site and clicked on view all specs at the bottom right hand corner of the screen. Now fawk that I'm not getting this crap. I was excited about it but now screw it.
My HTC one x took better pics then my HTC one. And the new HTC one did not get improved in terms of can lol. Like other people are saying I'd be happy with 6-8mp.

I've taken very few photos so far - mostly because it's been damn cold outside - but the few I have taken look to me to be noticeably better than what I was getting out of the M7 under the same conditions (overcast, challenging lighting, very dark room). And it focused much quicker and held it much better. Of course, I will need to take more before I can really say but my first impression is very favorable and that they have tweaked the camera to make it better even if the MP/UP count is the same.

I am in the saaaaame boat ... I have a M7 and love it .. I too work out all the time and like to store music and movies on my phone and 32g is not enough... I had Many Samsungs and just do not want to go back to touchwiz after being back on sense I can't look at touchwiz everyday can't do it ...nor do I want a Rom or launcher cause no matter what u say they don't look as finished and run as well as oem .. I've done it all... And don't have time in my life to hack phones...
I was looking for HTC too at min give a 8mp camera... I have been looking into the Sony Z2 and am hopeful these Verizon rumors are true if not my options will be to deal with the M8 camera or unfortunately try iPhone 6 for the first time ...I'm not leaving Verizon and am not dealing with touchwiz ... HTC IMO could have killed everything with a amazing camera... There is no 1 phone with everything period.. Ur right .. the other hope if for the LG G3 ... That's a long time away though..and I have to hope they offer 64g or expandable memory

I had an Original HTC ONE , Iphone 5s, and I jsut got the HTC one 2014 in the mail last night.... I take tons of pics.. I do not screw with them at all, and by at all i mean i take the pic.. and that is it except for the occasional crop or filter for instagram. I have to say after going through my backups on Google photos, the HTC pics just look better. This is like every man use, I take quick pics of my kids, my friends and things like that.. the HTC one pics are just better looking. Now i'm not saying if i blow them up that its not going to get blurry.. but in all the years i have had cameras and phones, I have never done that. I don't even use my pics for wallpapers.
Anyway.. so far the HTC one m8 is taking great pics. I haven't used it much yet, but what i have seen i really like. The pic is taken instantly which is a big deal for me. The colors just look so vibrant. I seriously think this camera in 8mp or 16mp would be completely amazing and by far the best. I'm not sure why they don't do it... space issues maybe.
The sweet spot between what the iphone 5s can take that is better than this camera is minimal...for me anyway. What i am trying to say is that if the subject in the photo is far enough away that i need to zoom/crop with an HTC one pic then its probably too far away for my iphone.. and what isn't to far away for the iphone would need to fall within a distance "sweet spot" that i rarely see myself using. I do not software zoom on any camera.

It's because it would not allow in as much light and would lower the quality of pics in average lighting (looks at S4 indoor pics vs M8). By using lower MP it takes the pics faster and has better detail in moderate lighting.

Taken a few more shots today. The camera is serviceable, but I'm getting colors that just aren't right. In situations with blue sky, the white balance just seems off, or something else is going on. I can't figure it out. Anyway, a couple from lunch, experimenting with color and sharpness to see if I can get something better out of this.

Yea, looks extremely detailed. I do notice that there is a slight color saturation that favors certain hues but it's no where near as bad as the horrid iPhone color saturation that they build into every model.

Shouldnt we be able read what's on the steering wheel buttons at that distance? Or is that what you blurred?

This is the original image before UFOCUS and the other adjustments made with the HTC editing tools. UFOCUS is for fun, but it doesn't replace a camera with a fast lens to create smooth bokeh.
