Wow, just got back from an extensive in-store comparison with the M8, my old One, and the Samsung. I don't know how people are having such focus issues but with minimal care, I found pics to be really sharp. Wonderful cam. I had to check it twice to make sure that it was really the M8 because the reviews have been so wrong. To make sure I had a basis for comparison, I snapped pics w/ my current One (which has a camera I love) and the M8. No contest. Even my wife noticed that the M8 had far greater detail and superior white balance. Big step up. With the Samsung, it was closer. The samsung pinch-zooms far more so I couldn't find which was the winner in terms of minutia but they were definitely comparable and the only way you could slam one or the other for real-world use. The Samsung did not handle shadows as well and too much longer to focus and click. Overall, I found the M8 to be faster, with a much more pleasant interface so it was an each choice. I was hoping my current One would be comparable so I wouldn't have to switch phones but having seen the difference I need to take the step up.
This is the original image before UFOCUS and the other adjustments made with the HTC editing tools. UFOCUS is for fun, but it doesn't replace a camera with a fast lens to create smooth bokeh.

I was at Verizon. I don't know which Samsung (I'm not a phone person) but I asked them for the best one so I could compare. In which store were you able to accomplish this feat? As far as I know only verizon has the M8 in stock and only best buy has the S5 on display.

Yea, the M8 killed it, IMO.Gotcha. So you compared the M8 with last year's Samsung flagship. Thanks for clarifying.

Just went on to Flickr to see if anyone has been posting M8 pics. Found one good gallery so far. HTC One (M8) - a set on Flickr I think I'm going to ignore the negative reviews and buy one based on what I've seen in various galleries. I think the M8 might actually take better pics than my Nexus 5.
Thank you for confirming this fact. I guess I'll be waiting for something better instead - perhaps the next One or even next Moto X (though I highly doubt Motorola cares about that). A rear camera is important to me - I don't need to use it to force-feed bathroom selfies to my temporary "friends" through Twitter/Snapchat, I'd like to take interesting photos which can be enjoyed by people of different genders and generations, even when viewed full-screen on larger, properly calibrated monitors. I already suffered through one phone (Moto X) with a barely useful camera (even though this phone is awesome in most other aspects) and don't want to repeat the experience or try and mess with manual settings for each photo and do some post-processing on PC (I prefer to have a camera which can take GOOD pictures most of the time in good lighting conditions in "auto" mode). I also don't want to carry my large P&S camera everywhere (which is pretty bulky and takes some time to remove from its bag and turn it on) anymore and try to remember to always keep its (proprietary) battery charged.
I know that. But I need something better and more consistent than M8's camera.Dude. The M8 camera ****s all over what the Moto X is capable of

So has anyone taken pics and transfered them to their computer? I'm curious just how much is lost when enlarged. Also has anyone printed out any pics? I print a lot of My pics in 5x7 format and even a few 8x10. I'm still on the fence about getting this phone. I do want more than something that looks nice on my phone screen.
I don't care what kind of phone you have, that's not how I judge someone's worth or intelligence.
