HTC One (M8) camera discussion

[quoted post deleted by moderator]

It's not a matter of what the pixel count is, but rather whether or not it meets your requirements of what you need the camera for.

Clearly you need your phone camera for much more professional uses than the average user and the 1020 is a beautiful phone with an amazing camera.. However, for someone who only up uploads to social media, this camera is good enough.

I get tired of the camera snobs telling me megapixels done matter and I must be stupid if I can't figure it out. It does matter. My Note 3 out performs my wife's HTC One almost every time in picture quality. My htc one x took better pictures than the One did. HTC went backwards with the camera. Also you can take amazing pictures with a phone. I have printed out numerous pictures that look incredible so please stop with the snobbery....it gets old. Having said that this is a great phone but the camera makes it a no go for me.

Megapixels do seem to matter in the real world....

Received a card reader from Eye-Fi for my Eye-Fi card that no other reader is able to read. Grabbed a quick snap with my M8. The more I use the phone, the more I think this phone camera will be good enough for my uses. I don't print from my phone camera shots,do this will be fine. The other awesome aspects of this phone are just too good to give up!

I have feeling the m8's camera will be just fine for most of us. Its those low-light indoor shots that I'll be paying special attention too as, to me, that's the tricky part.

Both the wife and I are laboring along with Droid Bionics. The last 3 phones we've had have had cameras that were either sub par, or barely adequate. We skipped on the MotoX, a phone I really wanted, due to the lackluster camera. We both use cameras in our job and neither of us really wants to carry a dedicated camera around with us, in this day and age of 20 MP smart phone cameras why bother? Plus the ability to almost instantly transfer a phone picture to a client or back to the office is mind boggingly useful. And, it's nice to be able to zoom in and crop, both of us occasionally find that useful.

So I guess we're going to wait a little longer. The M8 is sweet in every other regard, but taking a photo for documentation purposes, and later not being able to zoom into a certain area and crop, is a deal breaker for me. I'll continue looking at the pics M8 users post, but right now it looks like the S5 is the phone we'll get, which bugs me because I'm not a fan of Samsung phones. Or continue laboring along with the Bionics until a MotoX refresh comes out? I suspect it will have the same camera, or one that's only marginally better. Or maybe VZ will bet the Z2? No, that's too much to ask.

Why not the S5 if you don't care for the M8?

That's a big reason I'm drawn to this cam, it soaks up light where other phones can't. They talked about doing this lower MP rating in favor of letting in light 2 years ago and I was patiently waiting for them to implement it. Though my experience so far is limited to pics online and shadowy areas in the Verizon store, I've been really happy with it. Like most people, the majority of my pics are indoors, of family, pets, etc, and light is always a struggle with phones.

As I said, I'm not a big fan of Samsung phones, I've got friends and clients with S3s, Notes and S4s, and I'm just having trouble warming to them. But since the wife likes them, it's probably the one I'll wind up with. Damn Moto and HTC for putting crappy cameras on their latest phones!

Well, I decided to order one and will post some tests on Tuesday. I have a photographic b/g and will try to push the limits and discover the strengths of this cam so people can make an objective evaluation.

I am very pleasantly surprised by the camera. It was by far my biggest concern and I was certain it wasn't going to fit my needs or do an adequate job. I was wrong and I seriously am thrilled that the phone takes better pics than the M7. For my uses, printing off 5x7 photos (without cropping), posting to social media and viewing them on my phone or tablet, it works great! The picture I have attached is cropped to 50%. I don't think I will have one issue printing a 5x7 or 8x10. If you use the camera as I do, don't let this camera stop you from buying the phone.

Having taken a bunch of shots with the HTC One (M8), and having gotten used to the camera, I can state that it works fine for my purposes. Image quality is good. Would it have been nicer to have an 8mp camera? Sure. But based on the shots I have taken, the image quality is quite good, and perfectly usable for my needs.

The camera is the reason I got rid of my htc one. I could not believe that they did it again. The reviews are spot on.

I'm coming from the HTC EVO LTE which has an 8mp camera and takes great pictures outside and decent ones inside. In the settings I turned down the picture size because I had to resize them all anyway. I checked the pixel dimensions of shots from that phone and the M8 and they are actually slightly larger on the M8. So far the M8 is taking great pictures for me, especially on subjects where I've had focus issues with the EVO. I'm going to be taking some pictures tomorrow with both phones to do comparisons but I'm pretty sure I'm going to be pleased with the M8 results.

Now I am one of those people that use a real camera for real camera situations but also count on having a camera in my pocket at all times. So I need all around performance. I understand that people have different needs and since the M8's camera specs are out there in the open, it's very easy for people to make their choice based on that. I don't understand the bashers who go onto forums as if HTC purposely did this to them or promised something else before the phone came out. The bulk of people who buy these phones have no clue what a good picture is anyway. Or even know what their phone can do. They're mostly sheep. Every time a new phone comes out this cycle will repeat.

@NicksGarage, I truly understand your sentiment but there are a lot of people out there, most of whom you do not and cannot know. Referring to people you cannot possibly know as 'sheep' may be a little presumptuous.
