HTC One (M8): Does your menu button work?

Re: Does your menu button work?

I know what you're saying, but it's a matter of them taking away a non-destructive function. That's what I liked better about Motorola, I had all the options I needed and more. I enjoy the simplicity of an HTC but they'll lose my business by doing things like this. There's multiple threads where people are complaining about nonsensical choices so I know I'm not alone. I don't think I should have to root to avoid a downgrading of functionality. I don't really want to waste any more time debating it so I'll just leave it at that.

Hey I agree about not having to root for certain things. That shouldn't be necessary. I was just throwing it out there.

Re: Does your menu button work?

Do you have a Sprint M8? I'm curious of they some how managed to remove the menu button in legacy/outdated apps because of this setting. I don't imagine that they did, but just curious. I'm sure it wouldn't appear if someone enables their special button shortcut though, just not sure if it's showing up when that option is not checked.

I do have a sprint M8. I think, when I took the screenshot to put in that post that I checked it both ways, and it didn't make a difference (both showsedthe legacy menu key, home still didn't take to the menu). I just went to verify that, but with the update sprint pushed today the option is gone, so I guess we'll never know for sure.

Isn't the inclusion of an in-app menu option and the loss of the dedicated menu button a google driven android design spec, rather than a choice HTC made? I don't think any recent high-end smartphone has a menu key anymore. do they?

That's pretty much what is happening. Even the s5 loses the menu button for a multitask button. I'd say besides some lg phones, which do have a menu button, most new phones are going that way since developers are putting menu buttons and using the sidebar in their apps now. Personally I really like it.

Re: Does your menu button work?

I think the old Menu button caused a lot of confusion among some users because the same button brought up different options depending on where you were in the app.

Now with the "Action Overflow button" that Google has been pushing (starting in 4.0) there is opportunity to make things a bit more clear. Like in the Play Music app, you have Action Overflow buttons under songs/playlists for options on those items, versus a sliding panel with settings for overall account settings, and then a third one at the top right for like... playback settings. It's both helpful and confusing at the same time, in this case, however. Just depends on how quickly one is able to catch on to it.

I'm feeling your pain right now, Bowie. I hate the fact that the damn Menu button doesn't quite exist like I've been SO used to using on my Moto Razr Maxx! I just got Nova installed on my new M8, but how in the heck do I get to the dang PREFERENCES (settings) of Nova so I can set it up?!!! I'm obviously missing something, and hopefully it's probably something easy. Anyone?

**UPDATE** Never mind. I found it under the Apps screen. Duh! :)
