HTC One (M8): iPhone user with questions!

Like some of the others here I also switched from an iPhone 5s 32GB to the M8. Today in fact. This morning I was using the 5S, now I'm using the M8. Yes, its completely different software wise. But for the better in my opinion. You can't beat the customization that is available with Android. The phone feels amazing in the hand, looks great, and is blazing fast. Yes, the 5S also looks great and feels great in the hand but the screen size and customization options just aren't there. I think you will be happy with the M8, and if your not, you have 14 days to return it...

It's nice to hear from people making a living doing photography say they don't care so much about the cameras quality on the phone in general that if they want a great photo they would use a real camera. That's what a pro does .

The 5megapixel front camera is one of the best for selfies.

I disagree. The camera shouldn't be a compromise. The best camera is the one you have with you at the moment. Our phones go wherever we go usually, the cameras should?t be questionable. What?s more they are "real" cameras. Not only Pros with big DLSRs want decent pictures. HTC is blowing it with their relentless yet apparently futile attempt to redefine mobile photography. IMHO

Take 100 pictures with it they are nice. Sure you will have some bad ones but you will have some bad ones with 8meg or higher in 100 pics. It's not bad pictures

Lemme ask you this. When was the last time you go a picture printed you took with your phone? Now let me ask you this, when was the last time that print was larger then 8x10? Because you can EASILY print an 8x10 with a 4mp camera. To many people who are uneducated about MP keep talking about it like they are incredibly knowledgeable on the topic. Lets go over a few things here:

FACTS:
- Doubling the MP count only increases the real, linear resolution by 40%.... making it hardly noticeable.
- a 3mp camera has 2,048 pixels horizontally... a 14mp camera has 4,500.
- You can print any size print with a 5/6mp camera. Why? Because the larger the print the further you will stand from it to view it.

The point of this post is that 99% of people dont know how any of this works, nor will they ever print any pictures taken with their phones. Social Media sharing absolutely, but those are so compressed it doesnt really matter anyway.

I am switching back over from the iPhone5s. In my opinion and in many reviews it seems like it will certainly either be number 1 or 2. I will miss a few things from my iPhone. The fingerprint scanner was really awesome and very convenient. Other small things like imessaging / face timing. and using emojis with all my iphone friends lol. Might even miss how portable it was. Don't get me wrong, I am excited to move back to the big screen. But that iPhone was super easy to pocket and to do everything with 1 hand.

you can use emoji's in android as well, on KK it's even easier than the iphone. i download the google keyboard (which is the best keyboard imo) and the emoji's are always there, either where enter would be or longpress on enter and they show up.

I don't print pictures, and while I appreciate your wisdom with regards to photography, I had a One, and the pictures were pretty bad when cropped and/or zoomed in on, something I do quite often (I am scenery mobile photography addict, if such a thing exists). The problem lies more with the fact that the photos are very soft. The software processing of the pics isn't that great IMHO. But, if the photos are only for social media, random photos of my meal or my kids, I agree with you, the HTC One's camera is more than adequate.

Well 4mp is a marketing failure no doubt...

Those of you discounting the importance of your phone's camera clearly don't have kids. I have tons of photos shot using my DSLR but my favorite ones are those that I captured in the moment when my son spontaneously hugs his little sister or the wind happens to blow my daughter's hair in just the right way. Those are times I wouldn't be toting around the "real camera" but would like to be able to get the best shot possible. For that, a good phone camera is priceless.

I'm tentatively sold on the One but if it costs me photos I know I would otherwise be able to capture with my iPhone, it will be tough to continue to justify.

Two kids here, and sure its nice to have a decent camera on my phone but my phones main purpose is not to take pictures. Plus I have never once printed a picture I've taken with my phone so megapixels don't matter. Only share them via social networks or texts with family which get compressed anyway.

Your use case is clearly different from most people. I don't print pictures often but, when I do they are often from my iPhone's camera.

I don't know a single person who has printed anything taken from a cell phone. But ya if you do and are worried about the quality, 4mp is enough to a 12x18 without breaking a sweat. In an ideal world Apple would open up ios more (let people pick keyboards and such), and have a 4, 4.7, and a 5+ Iphone since I think the consensus is they have the all around best and most consistent camera out.

Most people are not professional photographers and as such won't be printing pictures. But that does not negate the need for a good all round camera. One of the main uses of smartphones these days IS indeed to take pictures. In fact for most people it's the only camera they have, the only camera they take with them when they go on holiday. That is why such emphasis is placed by manufactures these days on cameras. HTC is one of those manufacturers and their modifications to the MP paradigm is evidence of that. The end result may not be the best, but emphasis was placed on making a 'better' camera. To belittle the importance of the camera on a smartphone as an excuse for the One's faults, is to belittle HTC's efforts to redefine what's a good smartphone camera. This is work in progress anyhow and thing it will be cracked soon enough.
