I guess I have small hands. My right thumb can't even reach the upper left-hand corner of my 5s' screen without adjusting my grip for that purpose.

IOS 7.1 has been perfect on my 5S and mini retina.
I just went down to the Verizon store and, for me, it isn't much larger than the M7. Now when I compare my M7 to my wife's 5s or the 4s that I used prior to the M7 it will probably seem much larger.I'm going from a 5s to the M8 and the size is the one thing that I'm worried about. It is pretty tall. Does it still fit comfortably in a front pocket?
That's 100% false. As I stated earlier, 7.1 is working great on my 2nd gen iPad. No issues at all.Oh I don't doubt it, that's exactly the issue with Apple: Their updates only work for their newest and latest devices, forcing people to upgrade before their time is due or be stuck with a device that can't do half the things it's supposed to.
Really? Because with my iPhone 1, iPhone 3g, iPhone 4s, iPad 1, iPad 2 and iPad mini (non-retina) that has not been the case. Nor has there been a great outcry from the public about your issue. In fact, if anything people get upset when Apple declares that they won't support a new OS for a particular device as the experience isn't optimal. This would seem to be contrary to your experience. It's been 100% true in my case for all the Apple devices I've owned.

Maybe you're just unlucky.

M8 is very tall. I notice it too when holding it and navigating. I strongly prefer the height and weight of the M7. The M7 with Sense 6 (coming this summer) is a lot more appealing to me than the M8.
