HTC ONE M8 sim card not working/not detected

I've already looked this up and apparently it's a very common issue. I've inserted a brand new sim card and I get the "Preparing sim card..." message, so it's detecting something but it doesn't actually work.
Yes, I have tried re-inserting the sim card many times, and fixing its position on the tray, and cleaning it etc. and turned the phone off and switched to plane mode. I could try to place clear tape on the backside of the sim to make it thicker for supposedly better contact, but I don't want to risk breaking something.

I think it's most likely an issue with the phone/sim tray rather than the sim card. This is really frustrating because I bought the phone online from the grey market. It's going to take at least a month before I receive a new phone, IF they agree to give me a new phone.
Besides this issue, I'm really liking the phone. If it can't get it fixed I don't know which other phone to get. :'(

Did you check the imei before purchasing? Are the apns correct? You provide very little information to allow us to help you. Android Os version? Carrier? Firmware version? Etc....

I am having the exact same problem, this started a week ago. I kept taking the sim out and putting it back in and no joy. I also tried cleaning the sim contacts and it seems to be fine now.... but we will see. VERY annoying.

Bot_Fly, I haven't checked the IMEI. I just looked up what it is. I thought you can only get the IMEI after you receive the phone, not before?
What is APNS?
Android OS version would be the latest one. Carrier is Hello Mobile (Australian provider), and not sure about the firmware. All I know is that it's Chinese because the phone was shipped from Hong Kong.

What did you use to clean the contacts? I don't have alcohol and I don't have a suitable cloth.

I'm going to buy 2 cheap sim cards tomorrow and see if they work. Fingers crossed they do so I know it's not the phone's fault.

This happened to me after I unlocked my M7 phone last summer and used other SIM cards in my phone. I believe the problem relates to the contacts within the phone becoming loose after insert/removal of SIM cards..

I put two layers of scotch tape on the non contact side of the SIM and trimmed the tape and then inserted the SIM back into the phone. The tape increases the thickness of the card very slightly, and made for a tighter contact within the phone.

I have been having this problem for a few weeks, really since the update. I have not updated, but I have tried new sim, wipe cache, nothing. Read on another post that he did a reset and it did not work. I have AT&T 4.4.2.

Here is what works for me
Remove the sim tray and reinsert again
While pushing it in, off the phone
Power the phone back on
if they didnt come up, do the following
dial *#*#4636#*#*
Click phone information
Scroll down and turn off the radio
Wait some seconds or 1 minute and turn it on again
They should come up

Guys I have a htc one m8.Recently the network connection isn't showing.I put out the sim tray again inserted it.It shows preparing sim but shows no service.The sim is working fine on other phones.I have tried the process of *#*#4636#*#* but i cant set up the preferred network on wcdma preferred or gsm auto(prl).Pls helpp
