I currently own an iPhone and am sick of it. I really love stock android just from what I've seen and heard and today I got to see a One M8. It looks a lot like stock android and was wondering if when android L is released, will HTC adopt much of it's features like "material design" ?
This is the only thing preventing me from deciding. Also is the camera really as bad as they say it is?

generally, manufacturers "skins" are optimized to work with the current OS; so, when google pushes the new OS software, and the phone manufacturers add their "skin", it should work the way the OS specifies..

I think either phone will be fine. I would suggest the X, but something to do would be to go into a carrier store and play with the live phones.

i had the htc one m7 and now the new moto x 2014.

the m7 camera sensor is the same as the one in the m8 (i think) with the added features of the second depth camera and the amber flash - and gone is the purple tinge issue in dark environments.

that being said, i prefer the htc one camera. people bash it because of its low MP count but i've always been impressed with the sharp pictures it produced (particularly indoors). Clueless iphone users praised the photos i took with my m7 as well.

as far as android goes - its a matter of taste. myself particularly liked Sense but i am also digging stock android very much. Its comes across as cleaner and simpler but Sense does add a few helpful tweaks here and there. Yet, the Moto features are very well put together and really useful.

The Moto X speaker is actually pretty good. Not as good as the HTC One boomsound obviously but with this device, i don't miss it .

My advice?

If you are split between these two devices go for the Moto X. You'll save yourself $100 and get a great all-round experience as well as Android L in a timely manner.

If the camera is really your thing and expect great pictures none of them will probably satisfy you - though in my opinion you are better off with the HTC One.

Hope this helps.

The HTC One M7 and M8 have different camera sensors. The M8 has a newer sensor and takes better pictures.

If you're after an experience that's as close to stock android as possible, then the Moto X would be the choice. I don't know how good the camera is on the Moto X, but the One M8 has a great camera, especially in low light scenarios. I don't think there's a phone that takes better low light shot and taking a photo in poor conditions and being confident the shot won't be total garbage.

Other high end flagships take better photos in bright light and well-lit areas, but the One doesn't take horrible shots in those conditions by any means, it's just not as good as those higher resolution snappers when you're taking really wide landscape shots and expect lots of detail.

I don't know what the battery life is like on the new Moto X, but the One has pretty stellar battery life. I regularly get 5.5-6 hours screen time with moderate usage during the day. No gaming or intensive app usage though.

I don't think you can go wrong with either phone. I dare say I think Google seemed to be influenced a bit by HTC with the material design. The bright pastel colours in apps is something HTC has had on Sense, prior to Android L reveal. Also Google have implemented the highlight videos HTC has had since last year. Seems Google borrowed a few things from HTC for KitKat and Android L, but we'll never know for certain.

I don't think you can go wrong with either device. Honestly just try them both out and see which you prefer.

I'm in the same boat I have iphone 5 and ready to come back to android just don't know to which. It is between M8 and moto x

I've had my One M8 since May.

I absolutely love this phone.

The only thing I did not love was the lack of updates through VZW. So I got tired of waiting and went with the ViperOne ROM. Took me forever to get rooted and unlocked and S-Off, but I got it and now I'm just fine.

The thing about Android devices is how different each one is. Stock Android is what you get on the Nexus devices. The next closest to stock is the Moto devices Google puts out - like the Moto X. Then after that are the custom ROMs that cut back to close to stock Android - like the CleanROM for the One M8. But of the non-Google devices that run Android, HTC has really done a phenomenal job in keeping the feel of Android without too much bloat. Of course there's always carrier bloat, especially from VZW, but if you root you can remove those items (even with the temp-root Weaksauce exploit, which doesn't void your warranty). For a more genuine Android experience, I use Nova launcher instead of Blinkfeed. But I really, really, really like Sense 6. It's a great feel for the device.

But really, either device will be fine. My girlfriend has the original Moto X, which only has issues because of poor signal in my area from AT&T (hence why I have VZW). But other than that it works really well. If you want the more genuine Android experience, go with the new Moto X. You can always customize anything you don't like.

For Android, SwiftKey is pretty much necessary. Best keyboard bar none.

Honestly, the only thing I don't like about the Moto X is the lack of a SD card slot. I have had all of my music, photos and videos on a SD card ever since my HTC Evo 4G. I was in the Samsung camp when HTC didn't have a SD card slot on the M7 and owned the Galaxy S II then Note II. I have been a very happy camper since the M8 was released with a SD card slot and really love the M8.
