Maybe people rely on the S3's sales to do the same with the S4? They sold a lot, clearly they're the best?
People justify anything and everything. To say its more here is just the nature of timing. It will happen with the S4, the next Nexus, or any other device that requires choice amongst peers.

I think there's a lot of people who bring up the sales of the S3 to highlight why the S4 will more than likely outsell the One by millions of units, but not necessarily to prove it's better. If that were the case, then the iPhone is better than both these phones and I think we can all agree that's not true. That being said, I do think the Galaxy line has become the new iPhone of Android because even when it succeeds, it fails. It fails because there's this unrealistic expectation every year to drastically change the phone when it would alienate the people who invested in it in the first place. Samsung introduced a boatload of new features, pulled an Apple and did it while making the phone smaller, and upgraded the hardware where it needed it.
The One comes on the heels of the DNA, which also has a 1080p SLCD3 screen (which was bigger), Beats Audio, the same curved unibody design (albeit without aluminum), and a more than capable 8MP camera. So the One brought the aluminum, chamfered edges, stereo speakers, Sense 5, and the Ultra Pixel camera while making the screen smaller and introducing a different button layout. If you want to get technical, outside of Sense 5 (which still runs the older version of Jelly Bean), they didn't really do that much, either. If you've got a DNA, all you're really missing right now is the speakers, the camera if you prefer the Ultra Pixel tech, a faster/more efficient processor, and the aluminum build. Whereas if you've got the S3, you're missing Android 4.2.2 with a plethora of new features, a bigger 1080p display, a 13MP camera, a bigger battery, a faster/more efficient processor, and a lighter/thinner design.
There's nothing wrong with liking the One better. A lot of people do, a lot of people don't. Just don't bash the S4 for these things when if you looked at it objectively, they're both amazing phones and one is going to suit you better than the other.
