Htc one screen broke

I have usually used Samsung phones while my son usually gets HTC. We recently purchased an HTC ONE (in October) through Amazon. Thirty-six days after the purchase, my son placed the phone on his dresser while he went to shower. When he came back, he picked up the phone and the screen simply cracked. I know this sounds incredible, but it did happen like that. I mean, he is thirty years old and doesn't just toss his phones around. I have a phone which has been dropped numerous times, even landing face down, and I don't have as much as a scratch on my screen. The only thing I can think of is a defect in the materials used for the screen. When we purchased the phone, we asked for the Total Equipment Protection be placed on that line, and, I thought it had been, since the bill was forty-five dollars higher and the activation fees are only thirty-six dollars. Unfortunately, the Sprint affiliate through Amazon dropped the ball and the phone isn't covered. Just wondering if anyone has had any of these problems, either with the HTC One or with purchases made through Amazon.
