I just made the switch from Blackberry to a Rezound last week and had issues with sending
outgoing mail through my self-hosted POP email account. The stock HTC mail client didn't
give me an option for SMTP authentication. As a result, I was able to receive mail with
no problem, but my outgoing mail was getting caught in some spam filters. From what I
could tell by reading through the forums, this has been an issue with htc for quite a
while.
I downloaded K-9 to use with my POP account. K-9 allowed me to set up outgoing
authentication, but I wasn't happy with some of the idiosyncrasies of the app. So I
tried the HTC client again tonight, entering the exact same settings as I did several
times before. But now my mail is getting through!
Only thing that's different from my first attempts is that K-9 had been installed on my
phone. I recall that while setting up my mail account in K-9, my phone prompted me to
accept a security certificate from my mail server. Perhaps the certificate is retained
in the phone, and the HTC client uses the certificate for SMTP authentication to send my
email (total speculation on my part). I have uninstalled K-9 and my HTC mail is still
going through.
So while it's a lot of jumping through hoops, it appears to be a way to get the stock
email app to work. Figured I'd post it for those of you who may be struggling with the
same issue. Hope this helps somebody. It's worth a try.
