HTC Sync Manager says no phone connected

When I plug in my phone, it pops up with an HTC SM message, and says its connected as a media device, USB connected, etc. but the software on my Mac doesn't communicate with the phone. Sometimes its worked in the past, but more often than not it doesn't. I don't know of any other software that's supposed to do the job, or why I should need dedicated software, rather than just using Finder, but.. I don't know how else I can transfer files off my phone in anything like an efficient way. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Welcome to Android Central! First things first -- is the phone screen unlocked when you connect it? If the screen is locked, HTC Sync Manager probably won't be able to detect it.
