HTC TBolt commercial - video question...

hi everyone - I noticed they are airing the HTC made commercial again for the Thunderbolt.

there is a scene towards the end where there is a party and the guy presses something on the Tbolt and the video on his phone is then showing on the big screen tv for everyone to see - no cables involved.

how does he do this? is this even possible or just a special effect for the commercial?

I know you can do it using imedia share if you have a ps3. I'm not sure how to otherwise.

Pretty sure its called DLNA, you have have a TV that supports it to go directly to the TV.

You can wirelessly stream video, audio, and image files from your ThunderBolt to your TV using DLNA as long as everything is connecting in some way to the same WiFi router. Even if the TV itself is not DLNA capable and is not directly connected to your network, you can send the streaming media signal through another DLNA capable wireless device such as a Sony PS3 that is hooked up to the TV and connected to your network.

You will also need to install an app on your ThunderBolt to get this to work smoothly. I think Twonky works best for this purpose and handles the most video formats. It is a free download. HTC also sells a DLNA adapter that hooks up to the TV through HDMI, but it costs more than $100, and the phone communicates with it wirelessly. You do not need that expensive hardware adapter if you already have a PS3 hooked up to your TV and connected to your wireless network. There is no way to stream media from the ThunderBolt to your TV using a wired connection.

The DLNA connection works as advertised, but JPEG images are sent rather slowly, so it is time consuming to browse through them. The video and audio files may take a little time to load, but they play fine once they get started. A DLNA connection is better than nothing, but it is much less satisfactory than a direct HDMI connection would have been. DLNA also does not allow you to mirror everything that is happening on your ThunderBolt like an HDMI connection would. DLNA only allows you to stream media files.

The device must be DLNA capable in order to make a connection, so check the owner's manual. I would assume that most TV Cable boxes would NOT be DLNA devices, so I doubt an AT&T Uverse box would work for this purpose.

Twonkey will allow you to stream from you phone to tv through your Direct tv receiver
