What is a kernel source? Why does it make phone faster? How do you do this?

It doesn't make the phone faster. The kernel source allows the developers to create custom kernels (overclocked and lower voltage) and helps speed up development on roms like CM7, Miui, etc. Think of what we had before as being in Japanese, the kernel source converts a lot of that to English where it can be understood.
