Android Central Question

My Huawei Nova 3i phone's loudspeaker sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. Obviously the phone is not in silent mode.

Most of the time it doesn't work - this includes when playing music (either VLC or Huawei's app), when the phone rings and when I am already in a call and press the speaker button.

Sometimes when I leave VLC playing even though there is no sound, suddenly, mid-playlist, the sound comes back.

If I connect the phone to a loudspeaker or headphones, the attached device works.

I've tried a factory reset, safe mode and clearing the cache. All don't fix the problem.

What should I try next?

If factory reset and safe mode didn't fix it then it's probably a hardware issue. I would call your carrier and find out your options for repair or replacement.

Welcome to Android Central! Could it be intermittently connecting with some Bluetooth headphones you have nearby? This happens occasionally with my Pixel Buds (even though they're in the case and I haven't opened the lid).
