I accidentally formatted my gs6 edge, can I recover data?

My volume down button is broken (stuck being pushed in sometimes), and after accidentally ending up in a boot menu when I tried to take a screenshot (held the power and home button too long), I wasn't able to easily turn it back on. When I did finally get it back on, all of my data was lost and my phone was back to factory settings, sim card still activated. My phone isn't and wasn't rooted. Is there a way to recover my photos and texts and such?

I'm running Marshmallow 6.0.1

Did you happen to have this information backed up anywhere else? I always suggest having backups either on the cloud or on another hard drive (like your PC) -- If you didn't have these backed up then unfortunately this information is gone.

I didn't, unfortunately... I was hoping that wasn't the case since I saw a lot of people talking about file recovery software, but I didn't really understand how it worked. I guess it's time to start backing up!
