I almost took the Moto 360 back but I solved the battery issue

I got my Moto 360 last Tuesday. During the weekdays I had to charge it on my Qi charger about noon. But the real test was on Saturday. My wife and I were in Santa Barbara just sight seeing. It was a bad experience. By 4pm my Note 3 was down to 5% battery and the watch was about 15%. I pulled out my spare Note 3 battery and put it in the phone, something I've only done twice before during the last 11 months of owning the phone. I put the watch in airplane mode. The phone, oddly, lasted the evening until 11:30 when we got home. It was just a watch but it worked for 7 hours on that last 15%.

That's when it occurred to me. There must be something going on between the watch and phone. That something was either a lot of bluetooth activity or an app keeping a conversation going or both. So, I decided to take a radical approach. On Sunday afternoon I did a factory reset of the Moto 360 and a factory reset of the Note 3. A radical approach, to be sure, but I was formally trained in the Scientific Method and needed to freeze all the variables to a known state. I would install only Android Wear and Motorola Connect. No other outside apps. I did install other apps on the phone but no more related to the phone.

So, here is my result, one day into this radical experiment. I took the watch off the charger at 5:30 am. The phone went off it's charger at 6:00am. It's now 6:30pm, 13 hours after I first picked up the watch. My day was normal with the same amount of notifications as the past week. The result? The Moto 360's battery indicates that it's at 49%. I have full confidence that it will make it until it goes back on the charger at 10pm.

My conclusion is that the battery loss, in my case, was because I started loading it with apps. I treated it like my Pebble which let me load apps without any battery consequences. However, this watch is more sensitive and must be treated differently. Over the next week I'll ad some Android Wear apps to see if I can find the culprit. If I do I'll report back. It looks like, at least after today, that I'll end up keeping the watch.

What others apps did you install? There are some useful ones like the one that notifies you when your watch and charger disconnect. Or the launcher that lets you see all the apps on your watch.

This was a bit of a concern for me because when I still had the 360, my phone's battery was dying and it was hot when connected to the Moto 360. Maybe because I have a Nexus 5 and have horrid battery life to begin with, but it was definitely one factor why I returned the watch.

I used Pebble Locker to keep my phone unlocked when it was in range. Even though it's called Pebble Locker, it also works with wear. I suspect that might have been the culprit. I also installed Android Wear Mini Launcher as well as third party watch face apps like Facer and others.

It might have been one of those apps or the combination of them all, I don't know. But I'm staying away from them for now and am enjoying the watch for a few days before I try them again.

Right now I'm using a stock watch face with only one app installed, which is a "find my phone" app. Battery life isn't too terrible with this setup at the moment.

Great to know, and please update us. I'm tempted to do the same. I've been meaning to reset my moto x for a while now seeing that its batter hasn't been the same for the last couple of months (different issue obviously).

Today I've added Facer and associated watch faces. I'd say that there have been no change in battery life.

I have 3 watch face apps....a bunch of other things.... Watch last me at least 18 hours.... Then some. Get up at 5am..put it back on charger at 11pm....still with 25%.

I have to amend that statement. I added Facer about noon. When I went to bed at 10pm I was down to 8% battery on the watch. Not nearly as good as Monday.

This morning I noticed that in the first two hours the phone battery dropped 19%. I wasn't so happy with that. So, I backed up the Facer folder on my phone (I had spent a lot of time making and acquiring faces) and then deleted the Facer app. In the 3 hours since removing Facer the battery has only dropped 6%.

I realize that this isn't scientific and only anecdotal so your results may be completely different. I'm sure that a number of you will reply that Facer works fine and doesn't drain your battery. It may not be Facer at all but the location I'm at and the activity on the phone. I'm only testing the way I know how. I have until Monday to return it to Best Buy and I want to see at least two consecutive days without battery issues.

On the other hand, if I have a smart watch that only works properly in generic, factory installed mode is that what I'm looking for? It's pretty and all but if my Pebble can do a lot more with longer battery should I trade that for pretty?

On this first day with the factory reset. did you get good/typical battery life out of your phone also? My Razr M has been suffering since i hooked the 360 to it.

It's hard to say. I started loading Wear apps pretty early on. During the week, when I'm at the office when sitting at my desk I just set my phone on it's Qi wireless charger. So, I never notice any battery issues on my phone. They may have been there I just don't notice the issues.

Has anybody noticed if the wear mini launcher is affecting batter life?
