I am new to this forum and need some basic information.

Hello everyone! I just joined this forum and would like to root my droid razr maxx. I was looking at the sticky post about rooting and was directed to Matts DROID RAZR Utility 1.82. I notice that he states in big red letters, " This is ONLY for the Verizon DROID RAZR and the Verizon DROID RAZR MAXX which are running the Ice Cream Sandwich already. If you are on Gingerbread or Jellybean you cannot use this to upgrade or downgrade, you will brick."
Since I don't want to brick my phone I want to make sure what I am running. In the phones settings it says:
Model Number: Droid Razr Maxx
Android Version: 4.1.2
Is this the correct utility for my phone? The reason I want to root this phone is to prevent KitKat from auto loading. I have a grandfathered Verizon unlimited data plan and I don't want KitKat to lock out the wifi use with PDAnet+.

Welcome to Android Central! Android 4.1.2 is Jellybean, so it sounds like the utility isn't the right one for you. I don't have experience with rooting, so I can't give you any other details, but I'm sure there's someone else here who can!

Any help with rooting my phone to prevent KitKat from loading would be greatly appreciated.

Just so anyone that is willing to help me needs to know, I am a total noob at working with smartphones. I have tried to search for threads on how to root my phone but I am overwhelmed with all the info. Can someone direct me to a thread that gives me step by step instructions in plain English on how to do this. The final goal for me is to stop the auto update to KitKat.

I don't believe the RAZR Max is on the list to get Kit Kat.

It is definitely NOT getting an official KitKat update.

That is confusing. The FoxFi web page specifically states that 4.4 is not supported with the Razr Maxx. If it is true that the Maxx will not get the update how would they know it won't work and why would they put that disclaimer in there?

I think that's a mistake on their part. Maybe they're thinking of the newer Droid Maxx. The Razr and Razr Maxx ended their official updates at 4.1.2. You can check Motorola's website to confirm which devices are still scheduled to get updates.

That kind of sucks. I just spent the last 2 days trying to figure out how to root my phone (found an youtube video), installed Titanium pro and froze the update file for nothing.

Both of those things you did are good things to do to your Razr Maxx, IMHO.
