I am thinking of rooting, but kind of scared to screw it up

So freaked out...I either need to be talked down, or convinced of the advantage...

I was in the same boat... but with all this froyo madness and the free wifi tethering I jumped ship and rooted. Looking back, it was painless. Just be sure to backup your phone and follow directions and you should be fine. I would read this first.

If You're New to Modding/Rooting, Read This First! (Updated 08/05/10) - xda-developers

Just to name a few, the advantages you will have is the ability to do anything you potentially want to you phone. There are ROMs that completely change the way your phone looks. You can change bootup screens. You can change themes within ROMS. You can overclock your processor or underclock it using kernels. You can take screenshots of your phone screen. You can tether via wifi. You can get rid of bloatware.

Keep in mind you can damage your phone, but unrevoked has completely made it painless and 99.9% worry free.

I was scared too, but I took the plunge. I rooted my DINC using unrevoked and now I just used unrevoked forever to flash a new radio. Once you're rooted you will never look back. Just follow the instructions (as stated above) and you will be fine. I'm running Skyraider 2.5.2 sense rom. Now I just need to put the hydra kernel on it and I will be golden.

I was a little nervous too, but it wasn't that hard. Understanding why you are doing what you do can help, I think.

Long story short: The development toolkit is required because it allows you to plug in your phone and send commands to it via the Android Development Bridge (ADB) in the toolkit. When you plug in your phone and launch unrEVOked, it uses the ADB to send commandline arguments to your phone, which results in being rooted.

So freaked out...I either need to be talked down, or convinced of the advantage...

Read all of the threads here. Read all of the threads at xda. Find out what the trials and tribulations have been for those who've rooted.

After all of that reading, you'll discover that you really need to screw up masterfully to brick your phone. I read somewhere that messing with android radios is the most dangerous thing you can do to the phone...so when you upgrade yours, make sure you follow all directions carefully and take all warnings seriously.

Read. If you don't like living on the edge, let others work the bugs out first. My experiences have been a bit frustrating, mostly painless, and quite rewarding.

Your mileage may vary.

Agreed. I was hesitant at first, but I didn't want to wait for Froyo any longer. The hardest part, IMO, was getting the right drivers (Win7 64bit).

I just rooted using unrevoked, not sure if I will upgrade to Froyo. I did figure out the wireless tether, I tell you, nothing is easy. I had to download some file and save it to a directory android.tether on my SD card to get to the internet. Now it works flawlessly. Do I even need titanium back up if I backed up my apps using Astro, SMS and call logs using other apps. What else does titanium do, when free.

So is there a BB equivalent? I have a couple Pearls that I could "practice" on before going live on my Dinc...

Nothing on BB is equivalent. Just do it, it's literally starting up the unRevoked flash exe, plug in your phone let it do it's thing and you are done when it reboots the phone. It's as simple and non-hazard as it gets. Don't be scared just jump, that cliff is only 2 foot deep!

I was the same way, to the point where I downloaded all the files and had everything ready to go only to back away and not go through with it. Then I read some more, watched more videos, and finally said the heck with it, I wanna see what all these people are talking about!!!

It was pretty painless. Just don't skip steps. Don't be impatient!! That is KEY. Just relax and follow the step-by-step instructions. I also used the instructions another poster mentioned above from jonamerica. Very detailed and easy to follow!

That would be installing hybrid operating systems. My experience with the Storm was that two functions broke for every one the latest and greatest was supposed to fix.

So far as I know, there's no "rooting" or "jailbreaking" equvilent in the Blackberry world. I might have kept my Storm if there was.

That's key...be patient. When it takes 5 minutes or more to get past the droid eyeball, resist the temptation to pull the battery.

Well said. When your initial boot after you have loaded a new ROM takes a lot more time than usual, just let it happen. When i was rooting mine and 5 minutes later my bootup screen was still working, I was like crap i did something to my phone. That wasn't the case. The initial boot right after you load your new ROM takes a LONG time but it will load. Just remember, like douger said, PATIENCE.

Reading this thread is really tempting me to try to root my Inc and try some ROMs. I have read the info on the unrevoked site and don't understand the difference between unrevoked 3 and unrevoked forever.

I know people say to read threads and go from there, but there seems to be almost an overload of information on this whole subject. I see signatures with Rom info, kernel info, flash info, radio info, etc.... Seems a bit daunting.

I guess I'm just mostly afraid of screwing something up and not being able to return to a safe state.

DINC, just go with unrevoked3. Just remember, that Forever is, well, forever, lol. Just follow that stuff I sent you. It's easy.

Do you need a new radio to get skyraider 2.5.2? If so, how do you install a new radio? I haven't found clear instructions on how to do this.

Is there a definitive source for how to root...like, step-by-step, idiot-proof directions? And comparisons of the different ROMs? Also, directions on how to reverse it if you need to take your phone in for technical service or something?

As an earlier poster commented, there are a million choices out there, and it's almost paralyzing how many different scenarios there seem to be.
