Are you sure you flashed it with an unrooted ROM that's correct for that phone? (If you flashed a different carrier's ROM you probably won't get updates, because the update your carrier would send you would be different than the ROM in the phone, and would most likely either fail (which it should - before it starts updating anything) or brick the phone (which is why it should fail).
