I did the unthinkable... dropped Verizon UDP

I agree about Verizon needing more Wifi. I have Xfinity at home and as much as I hate them at times the Wifi signals they are piggybacking on their users modems have been helpful. The thing that ticks me off is that my home Wifi signal is so spotty that our stuff at home will switch to the slower public band. If it is my modem shouldn't both signals be spotty?

At least you don't have to worry about all those apps people have running sucking up the data plan.

That's fixable using the Android data settings that are built into data usage. You can easily lock down apps so they can't run in the background and use data unless you're on wifi. :).

Either way, unlimited data whether it is throttled or not is better than any set gb data plan.

It would depend on your needs, but I wouldn't say that is true in all cases. For example, Tmobile's base simple choice plan is unlimited but throttled after 1gb. For someone using say 2gb,it might be better for some to get a 2gb tiered high speed plan on Verizon which isn't unlimited .

This. It depends on someone's needs. Someone may rarely go over their plan but that one time they do they'd rather pay the overage and use full speed since they may be doing something that simply won't work on a throttled connection.

I gave up my unlimited. Last summer we were away and it was clear we were going to go over, so I just kept inching up the plan to avoid the overage. I called when I got back to drop it back down. It was very easy.

I guess you will be ok when your ISP does this too?

Do you mean his home ISP? ISPs for home have a harder argument since they can resolve any congestion issues with money... Whereas the wireless carriers have limited spectrum.

My home isp is twc and they do or did offer a 5gb tier and 30gb tier as options at a discounted price.

I really don't have a problem, and options are nice.

Similarly, I am on Verizon's 550 minute loyalty family share plan. I can opt for unlimited minutes but that would more than double my phone bill.

Not everyone needs unlimited, and the savings is worth it for some people

I was just saying that, I guess he would be happy if his ISP did the same as in charge for set limits of data.
This is B.S. either way with any company. There is no limit to the internet and they are merely charging for it like there was a shortage of space.
If speed is the issue then that's fine and would be ok to charge a difference in speed but NOT the amount of data.

I pay for speed with TWC and not a data cap.

If more everything didn't cost me $30-40 dollars more like the website is quoting I'd switch if they offered the 6 GB plan in lieu of UDP. But unlimited minutes and mobile hotspot aren't worth 30-40 dollars more a month on a family plan with 1 smartphone and 2 basic phones. So I will wait till they pull it out from under me.

I agree. I'm waiting until they pry it from me. My current plan is 700 minutes, 250 messages, and unlimited data for 2 lines. I pay $118/month. In looking at the VZW website, the best plan they can offer is unlimited minutes (never have gone over the limit of 700), unlimited messages (never went over the limit of 250 thanks to Hangouts), and 4 GB of data...All this for the low price of $132/month. WTF?!? Sure Verizon, let me give you more money for less service...

You will eventually go over the data plan and wish you never gave up the unlimited plan.

I disagree. If data usage has been consistently within a range that shows a person they don't need an UDP then there is no reason to keep it if they can save money by letting it go. I held on for a long time and then finances dictated a change was needed. Been off UDP for a very long time and have saved money because I was willing to let UDP go. Whoever said don't keep it just because someone tells you to is exactly right.

I agree with this. It is like my parents .. if you add both of their data usage together ... it is about 500 MB a month ... So if they had the unlimited data plan it would be a complete waste of money since they wouldn't get the usage out of it.

I also agree with this. I gave my UDP up a year ago. Only reason I needed it was no home internet, now with home WiFi I never come close to 2 GB let alone my 6GB limit. And I'm up for another subbed phone next year. Sweet. Bottom line is not everyone's needs are the same as someone else's .

Anyone that is regretting dumping their unlimited data you can get them for dirt cheap on ebay right now.. thanks to the apple glitch.
