I dropped my phone in the toilet

OMG I accidentally dropped my phone in the toilet, while flushing. I picked it up immediately, and tried to get the water out (some came out). But I can't turn it on. The Home and the Power buttons do not turn it on. I plugged it in the charger and the screen turn on, and it shows the charger lightning symbol and 100% (it was 46% when I dropped it). But I still can't turn it on.

I bought this phone back in April, so it's out of the 30 days return window. What should I do? (Please don't tell me I have a $800 paperweight. :()

(Oops didn't realize I have an account here. I'm the OP.)

It's a Galaxy S6 edge with non-removable battery. Doesn't help much. :(

Can I go through warranty to get a new phone?

The guide still works, but since you didn't put your phone in rice almost immediately, at this point you can either pray and hope it randomly turns on and works after a while, or you can go through warranty for a repair.

If you opted for insurance then you can get a replacement device by paying deductible.

Just adding to the 'bad news' :( You say your phone stills shows charge and turns the screen on, but won't respond to the buttons... If you're lucky, maybe the only thing that got damaged were the buttons. But at this point, only taking to either replacement by insurance (not warranty, this wasn't the phone's fault) or to repair with an authorized dealer (non-authorized dealers will void your warranty...not that you can use it now anyway...).

You guys mention the "insurance", does it comes with all new devices by default or something extra that you buy within 30days of purchase (if so, I didn't buy it)? (This is my 2nd smart phone and I rarely drop my phones, so I didn't think about this. :( )

No insurance and warranty doesn't cover it. So it's either authorized/non-authorized dealers. What are the chances of them saving the phone? I don't mind paying a few hundred bucks. Just not another $800 for a new phone. :('

My luck has reached rock bottom today......

Insurance is something that you would get either from the store you bought it or from the carrier (if you got it from a carrier store) or from another insurance company (if you have Renter's Insurance or Home Owner's insurance, sometimes they cover those little accidents too, just make sure filing the claim doesn't jack up your rates). Not sure if you can get the insurance after you bought it though, that depends on the insurance company.

Home owners insurance = deductible. What's the deductible for your homeowners insurance? If it's more than the cost of a new phone, well then, it's in the toilet! As much as people say that cell phone insurance is a rip off...I have used mine two times and my wife one time and let me say that it IS WORTH IT! YMMV

That's why I don't mind JUMP!'s 10 bucks a month. But again, check with your insurance company. I've seen claims from others in the forums before from both Renter's and Home Owner's insurance that have covered phone damage for a very small deductible (compared to getting a new phone) and without jacking up their rates. But mileage may vary.

Never turn on a wet phone! That will fry it. Dry it as best you can, set out in the sun until it's bone dry and try to start it.

Wouldn't do much with a phone with virtually no openings. This requires the phone to be opened. If it's enclosed, heating it up just keeps the moisture inside, ready to re-condense once it cools down.

Wow crazy!

I left my phone in the rice overnight (not in the sun though). Now, today I just hold the power button and it turn on!! Everything is working good so far like before. What a miraculous turn of event!!! :D

Do you guys think I should exchange it at the Samsung store though (incase something might act up in the future)?

You really can't exchange it after you've damaged it.

Like tlo07 says, you can't exchange it now, at least not under Warranty as the humidity indicator inside the phone is probably, most certainly activated, so the moment they open up the phone and the indicator is active, they void your Warranty.

Kills me someone purchases a $800 phone and can't pony up the $7/month insurance for it. Rediculous
