I think the One is awesome in standby mode, even better than my previous S3 which was pretty good. When not used at night over a 9 hour period I only get a 3% drop.

Download Tasker & Synkr. Tasker is a shell that you program with simple rules that control when your radios turn on / off, when your phone auto-syncs or whatever else you can think off. Synkr has a plug-in for Tasker that allows you to decide when to sync, what apps can sync and what time during the day you want to sync. With Tasker, the skies the limit.

For overnight, use airplane mode. Unless you need to recieve calls during the night, there's no reason for your radios to be active. This is where Tasker comes in handy. Make a rule for overnight settings. Come morning, Tasker will revert back to every day use settings.

There is a learning curve with Tasker, but it's worth it. With my Tasker settings, I get 1% battery drop overnight on my Galaxy S3. My phone is stock, non-rooted. Tasker is a great app that does what you want it to do.
