So I dug up a ported Gcam APK that claimed to work on any Android. I loaded it on my CAT S41 which has fairly mediocre (and borderline subpar) performance in very low light conditions with stock camera app (com.mediatek.camera). Here are some comparison images of the stock camera app's so-called "night" mode (aka shutter lag mode) vs the Gcam night sight APK. The 4:3 pics that look worse/dimmer are with the stock camera in night mode, and the better ones are taken with night sight.

First two are comparing night modes on both apps, 2nd set is daylight with both apps on default settings (no scene modes)

No overheating or battery-guzzling, so far as you've noticed?

Well, when running it for some time it will eat quite a bit of battery if left open for extended periods of time, but bear in mind I am using it on a MEDIATEK SoC and these things suck power more than mid-end SD63x. Definitely no background usage, but in 19m of ACTIVE USE it consumed 753mAh. Anyway, it is totally worth it and it is a free camera upgrade. Got Oreo on Thursday so still in novelty phase with Gcam.

Edit: I didn't really notice heat since I was using this outside in temps of 3C or lower, usually 0C (32F) and maybe a little lower than that at one point.
