I have decided I want to root my Evo. Mainly for the Mobile Hotspot. But I have a lot of questions before I start. I have Jailbroken a lot of iPhones and iPod Touch's, but that process is nothing compared to the Evo root.

1. How easy is it to completely brick the Evo?

2. What does it mean to "wipe" and "flash" the phone?

3. If something goes wrong is it easy to unroot and go back to stock?

4. Which rooting method is the most stable?

5. How do I install roms?

6. What problems did you run into while downgrading/rooting?

7. Is the stock evo rom good or should I install a different one?

Sorry for all of the questions, I just want to be prepared as possible before starting this. Also please tell me anything else I need to know. YES I have searched for my answers, but I couldn't find what I was looking for.

Thanks, Tyler

I'm fairly new to this but can try to answer a few of your questions.

Wipe 'wipes' out the memory, cache, etc. Flash dumps the new ROM, theme, etc onto your phone.

I used the method in this forum along with the video from XDA and was able to get rooted and back to life without any issue. You have to be patient and really pay attention to what you're doing.

Once you're rooted, pick the ROM you want, load it onto your SD card, and flash it from whichever recovery program you have.

I know there are people around here with a lot more knowledge who can give better answers but as a newbie these are the few I think I can help with.

Good luck.

YouTube - Broadcast Yourself.

Don't follow his guide just his explanation of root and stuff, the guide only works on 2.1 and you are on 2.2, use the sticky as a guide.

That will answer most of your questions.

Flash = install

Stock rom is junk

And if you pay attention and read enough threads, let me say it again. READ alot off stuff, chances are your question had already been answered and your problem isn't unique.

Goodluck

1. How easy is it to completely brick the Evo?
-If you follow all directions by the letter, its hard to mess it up really bad. Start going rogue, almost a guarantee.

2. What does it mean to "wipe" and "flash" the phone?
-See above post

3. If something goes wrong is it easy to unroot and go back to stock?
here - http://m.forum.androidcentral.com/showthread.php?t=19278

4. Which rooting method is the most stable?
-Simpleroot

5. How do I install roms?
-When you find a rom, they most likely will explain this

6. What problems did you run into while downgrading/rooting?
-Oh jeez, where do I begin? Lol nah, its easy

7. Is the stock evo rom good or should I install a different one?
-My vote: Baked Snack 1.7

YES I have searched for my answers, but I couldn't find what I was looking for.
-most of these answers came from the stickies on this page....im just sayin
Thanks, Tyler
-your welcome...I was bored :-p

#4, I would use the sticky and maybe even watch the two part youtube video and pause it as you follow along.... That is how I did it.. Took some extra time (Being new to this) but it's not as bad as you might think... Seems pretty hard to brick your phone.. I was scared to do it for 2+ months and finally made the move...

#5, I went to the market and paid $4.00 for a program called ROM manager.. It's a pretty simple way to flash a ROM... WELL worth the $4.00 as you don't have to hold down the volume down and power buttons and go through the whole bootloader screen... You just pick the ROM from the list or any ROM you have moved to the SD card and this program does the rest... Baked Snack was preloaded in this app and Vaelpak I just loaded to my SD card and ran ROM manager... Once you pick a ROM it automatically does the work for you.. (After your rooted)

#6, the only problem I had rooting was using the unrevoked method (which is what they used in the youtube video I followed along with) puts you on a hboot file that won't allow you to flash CM6 but so far I have been able to flash Baked Snack (Sense ROM) Vaelpak (non-sense ROM) To use CM6 I have been told to run Simpleroot instead to get to the correct hboot file....

#7, I think this is subjective... People who are rooted are going to say the stock ROM is JUNK.... I had no issues with the stock ROM but I like how custom ROM's allow you to completely change the theme (look) of your phone and removes all the Sprint Bloat Ware you might not use (NASCAR, NFL, Sprint Zone) clearing up a little space and memory usage... At least with a Rooted ROM you can have a true android/customized phone... The way Android is meant to be (IMO) There will be plenty of people who just love the phone right out of the box and could careless about rooting and to them stock is great..

Good luck....

Wow thanks for all of the answers. So it looks like simple root and the rom manager app is the way to go. I will definitely be rooting my phone after school tomorrow.

I think most of your questions were already answered. But I will say I started thinking hard about rooting my evo for a couple hours and just said what the hell, and I took the plunge. Honestly its not a hard process at all. It just seems scary cause you never have done it. Just take the plunge and do it. You won't be disappointed, promise. Just don't go crazy wild when your doing it.take your time. And enjoy being rooted!
