I am a new AT&T customer. I came over from Sprint. Anyway, I'm on my 2nd captivate. The GPS issue was so bad on my 1st phone that I thought maybe the hardware was faulty. The new phone exhibits the same behavior. GPS isn't a huge deal but it IS a feature I am paying for.

So my quandry is this, do I return the phone and move on to another carrier, which I can do without penalty, maybe get a G2 or a Droid X, or wait out the GPS fix. Does Samsung have ANY kind of track record for fixing this stuff? I read that the newly released Epic and the Fascinate BOTH have the same GPS issues.

Thanks for any input. I'm a huge android fan and hate to think about yet another new phone, but it is what it is.

To be honest my past 4 phones have been Samsung. I have a Samsung PC monitor and if I ever buy a nice TV it would be a Samsung. That said Samsung has a poor track-record of supporting their devices, especially cell phones. Samsung however is an industry leader in quality and you won't find better stuff in terms of electronics in my opinion.

It seems that this batch of phones (being the galaxy s series) Samsung is really making a point to turn itself around in the support department. I can faithfully say that keeping your Galaxy S would be a very smart move on your part.

2.2 is around the corner for us and with that will come all the fixes. Once the gps is fixed and 2.2 is running this phone is going to be the one to beat no question about it.

Motorola and HTC are great phones but they just keep pushing out more and more and it makes it difficult on carriers and manufacturers alike to support those devices. Samsung has been smart by releasing a solid line of phones that all have similar specs which in the long run (in cell phone years) Samsung is going to be better off.

Of course this is all just my opinion so take it as you will :)

I am also extra concerned because I got burned by that abomination called the Moment. If the Cappy wasn't so damned sexy and only a Penny from Amazon I'd be cruising iPhone forums :D

If you care about GPS, and the current performance prevents you from using the phone, return the captivate & get your money back. You can always buy another one if the GPS fix comes out.

Stick with the captivate and you'll be patting yourself on the back soon enough. Or as aon said above me return it for your money. Don't jump the gun on the Iphone or other carriers just yet though. The Iphone is nice and fun to play with for a few days but then its just another phone. Android is endless fun!

I hot an HTC ariaand returned the phone and the at & t service after 14 days... It cost me about $ 25 to do that after everything wad said and done, so yeah you can return it all but you do have to pay for what you use...

I do agree though this gps stuff is frustrating, it had been my favorite feature and is used by my favorite application (Cardio trainer).

It's a tough call but my advice is to stick it out, I have read at& t and other places will accept this phone back outside the 30 days so I would either get someone to commit to that for you or return it and try one more..no update 30 days from today and I would bail....

Everyone is advising you to stick it out, on the assumption that GPS gets fixed. Assume it will not, and make your decision- one way or another.

My impression is that Samsung build great electronics, but their support and customer service sucks - so don't hold your breath for any kind of gps fix.

I bought my Captivate for the screen size, and because I won't carry an Apple product. GPS is not relevant to me.

AoN.

I returned mine on Friday.

Even paying nothing, I didn't want to be stuck with AT&T for two years, if the software fixes didn't bring my phone to 100%.

I get 22% off AT&T service from work, and I still think the call quality and durability suck, and the plan price is way too high with a way too limited data service.

I will miss the gorgeous Super AMOLED screen for ebook reading and mobile web. However, that in it self is not enough to tie me to a provider that doesn't offer good service at the price point.

I may just use my old Nokia 5800 for another six months without contract or subsidy costs, and see how the LTE networks build out in my region.

I do not want to Taint anyones opinion, but Im a AT&T customer with a Blackberry 9700- I would Highly reccomend you return the AT&T Droid Phone and go to Verizon and test drive the Incredible or Droid X- The Incredible just got a new screen "SLCD" that will knock the socks off the AT&T phone. Im getting a Droid X.
The difference, Let me tell you after 6 months of Network Problems, Legitamate and well documented, you could drop dead, and AT&T will NOT give you a new phone, they will NOT let you out of their contract, and technical service SUCKS!!
Now im not saying Verizon is full of Angels with haloes over their heads, but you know what, if you have a problem and you go back to the store, I bet the manager and if that doesnt work, I can guarantee you that if you call Verizon Relations, you will have a new phone in hand. (That is if you have a legitamate problem, and your not playing lets keep up with the Jonezies"
AT&T has given Apple a "Preferred Touch" there is no Flash- Their Upgrades are very slow at coming out, and in general the only good thing they know how to do is take Money-
Lest we forget TMobile, also their Customer Relations Team will resolve a problem to your satisfaction, it is sad that a person has to pay so much money, and then when they have a problem, they have to beg to get resolution.
Hope this Helps. All the Carriers have their Gray areas, AT&T has a Black Cloud, I cant wait to kiss them off

Gunny dont put ur hopes so high on those "updates". Truthfully, I dont see AT&T be pushing out any upgrade for major bug fixes or froyo anytime soon. They dont have a very good record on pushing out updates. I didnt have such a great experiences with those upgrades when I was still using my Blackberry bold 9000. I personally think that Samsung will prolly keep their words this time on pushing out froyo with the way they are spitting out android device....but i dont think we will be seeing any gingerbread to the Cappy when it comes out.

then again...im pretty sure xda will prolly come out with something.

I have had excellent luck with ATT service. I have never had a problem returning a phone, which I have had to do at least 10 times in the last 8 years (3x for the biggest POS phone ever- the Incite, 2x for a BB Bold and 3x for a BB Pearl). One phone was even outside the warranty period. I have stuck with ATT because of their customer service and their excellent call quality (not coverage). I had Sprint for 3 years before that and finally left them when it got to the point where I could not even make a call without it dropping every time. I had a Motorola Droid for about 2 weeks through work before I could not take it anymore - horrible call quality and just a flaky phone in general. Even my basic flip phone replacement with Verizon sounds horrible. ATT Customer Service went to bat for me and got me the Captivate for $349 off contract. That said, everyone has their own experience and have to make their own decision, but there are 2 sides to everything.
