I think a repair will be needed

Welcome to Android Central! I agree--get the buttons repaired. Some phones will automatically power on when you plug them in, but most don't.

This might help as a work around.

If you plug your phone to charge, it'll usually turn on. Once on, you could then enable "tap to wake up" and then double tapping on the screen will wake up your phone.
Settings->Display->"Tap to wake up"
