I have disabled autocorrect but would still like to spell check. Is this possible?

I find the autocorrect on the S5 is ridiculous! Never gives a very good replacement for a misspelt word and just throws it in there and sometimes puts another misspelt word in. However, when I disable it, it won't even spell check for me. I would still like to look back and see what words I have misspelt and choose the appropriate word. Is this really too much to ask or does someone know how to set it up so it still suggests words, just doesn't put them in there until you click on it?

Autocorrect self-learns on most keyboards. (I use SwiftKey Keyboard + Emoji and it frequently anticipates a few words in a row.) The longer you use it, and the more often you can choose the word it suggests, the more often it'll get it right.
