Are you using a 3rd party app?
The stock calendar is tied to the calendars on your gmail acct.
If you are using a 3rd party app you have the option to display what the default calendar is set to or to choose which ones to display, but not delete them.
That can only be done from the gmail acct on a desktop.

Thanks for your reply, I have tried S Planner, Google's own app and others but none of them allow me to delete calendars only add them. None of these extra calendars show up on Google Calendar on the desk top though. Can you expand on what you meant by " gmail acct on a desktop"
