I have been looking for and app to test my home wifi speed in various locations around the house. There are lots of apps that check internet speed over wifi, but this is not what I am looking for. I simply want to check my wireless N speed from my router to my phone.

I need this to help me optimize my router settings to stream movies from my PC to my entertainment center where internet is not part of the equation.

Can someone suggest an app that does this?

"Wifi Analyzer" will get the job done.
Wifi Analyzer ~ Android Application v2.5.3 By farproc | Tools

Thanks, this is better than nothing as it gives me wifi strength comparisons but not wifi speed. This would be good when looking for the strongest out bunch of public wifi signals but I am looking for something to test my wifi speed at various spots in my home.

Signal strength should be a very good indication of speed. The better the signal, the better the speed (theoretically).

Remember, he's not trying to test the internet speed, he wants the speed of the actual network (for file transfer I would assume).

You need a server on the other side to connect to and test with. Just an App will not do it for you...

Download a terminal client (I like connectbot)
at the prompt:
ping 192.168.1.1
substituting your routers IP address for the one above. Returns response time from router in ms.

I think I would need an app that is on the phone and my PC so I could measure download speed from my pc. Pinging my router gives ping times but not my wireless speed (unless there is a way to convert ping response time into throughput speed).

Again, I don't want to test my internet speed, or signal strength, I want to test my intranet wifi speed at different locations in the house.

After searching a bit, I am pretty sure an android app does not exist that can do this.

When magazines do router reviews they must have a special speed test tool to test router through put at various distances. I basically want to do the same thing because I stream high def movies to my home theater and I need to get an idea of the maximum bit rate I should encode at.

Its been since this thread has started, sharing for those who might read later. Best solution will be using a tool like iperf. More details you can find in this blog.
