I rooted my TB about 2 weeks ago. I love it and i feel comfortable enough to start playing around with roms. But before I do that, i have a question. i have programs like firefox, scanner radio, skype, things that I have installed run in the background and when i kill them, some come back, some dont.
If i dont touch my phone for 10 hours, i have like 25 things that turned on by itself for no reason. Im thinking its a permission issue, but i havnt figured out how to turn them off perminentely. Super User shows what has permission but some stuff that turn on, i dont see under allowed, thats why im a bit confused. Can someone help me.

Also, with titanium backup, when i click an app or process, Titanium backup gives me a few options. "Freeze" i understand that one but it also has "Un-install" "Wipe Data" and "Delete" Im not sure what the difference is between those 3.

Also, Rom Manager and Titanium Back up both have backup options. Are they the same? Reason I ask is because Rom Manager says " Back up Current Rom" but Titanium Back up lets me back up all sys & data. Are those the same things just worded differently?

Also, lets say i screw up real bad, I can always restore stock rom right?

Just a few things im not getting.

Thank,
Ant

Titanium is used to backup apps and their data. If you freeze an app, you have essentially halted it from doing anything, almost like having renamed the file so it cant be found. If you uninstall, you may still have the back up of it, i think that's the difference between uninstall and delete. And wipe data wipes the app data for that app.

Rom Manager backs up your rom, kernel, and all data and cache. It makes a copy of your phone the way it is, that you can go back to. This is very different from titanium backup, and essential if you intend to flash roms. i suggest you read these
http://forum.androidcentral.com/thu...-backup-restore-install-roms-thunderbolt.html
http://forum.androidcentral.com/inc...back-up-what-restore-when-switching-roms.html

As long as you make nandroid backups - which you should do before you flash anything - you will have something to revert to should things go wrong. Most problems are solvable this way, but there are things that could potentially go wrong that can't be fixed - such as flashing an incomplete radio file or a corrupted radio file. That's the main reason people check md5s - which can be done from your phone with astro file manager or hash droid app.

About the first part of your post - the apps running in the background and starting on their own - i would just look thru their settings until i figure it out or else i would just delete them or let them run in the background. Without knowing what apps they are, etc, i dunno how to help you out there except to get a task manager which i do not recommend at all.

paintdrinkingpete wrote up a titanium tutorial for thunderbolt but i couldnt find it!!! sorry if you search the forums or hit his profile you will be able to get it.

First off, here's the tutorial I wrote up for backing up apps and data...
http://forum.androidcentral.com/thu...store-apps-data-when-installing-new-roms.html

It's not extremely detailed, nor is this the only definitive way to do things, but this is the method that has worked very well for me, and just reading over it should help answer some of your questions.

This is normal, and also really isn't anything to worry about too much. A lot of apps are made to "run in the background", which *should* use very minimal power and leaves them essentially in a "standby" state. With older versions of Android, a lot of folks used task killers to stop apps from running and consuming power, but the current versions of Android do a pretty decent job of task management, and often times killing tasks actually consumes more power because the device then has to restart it again. If you're concerned about battery usage, may be best to break that down separately.

Super User app will only ask for permission for app that REQUIRE root access...most apps do not.

"Uninstall" does just that...removes the app from the device
"Wipe Data" just clears the user data cache from the app, which you can also do under application settings
"Delete" To be honest, I'm not 100% sure, as I've never used this option. Perhaps this is needed to uninstall apps that normally can't be removed? i.e. VZW bloatware? Not sure.

Again, read the tutorial I linked to (inc. the 2nd post in that thread), it will answer a few of your questions.

The "Back up current ROM" option in ROM manager, which can also be done in CWR (and commonly known a s "Nandroid" backup). Is essentially a full image of your current setup. It allows you to easily revert back to if you install a ROM that doesn't work for you or you don't care for or you make a mistake and want to go back. Restoring from a Nandroid reverts EVERYTHING back to the state it was when the backup was taken, including software version. It is not for backing up and restoring settings when going from one ROM to another, it is used to be able to quickly flash EVERYTHING back to how it was before.
