I need some buying advice..

What OS are you looking to run? Or does it matter? I think some of the ChromeBooks run in that range, Linux will let you salvage an older laptop into something usable, and you can also look into the android-x86 to keep it in the family, but if you want full Windows 7 running Office that's a very different beast you'll be looking at.

The one I have in mind is a windows 7 premium 64-bit(Lenovo $299 at Best Buy) ... I like it but I also still want to have other choices.

I purchased a Compaq from Best Buy. It's usually 350 but goes to 299 every once and a while. I haven't had any problems with it. Gets the job done. Suggested it to my friend. He got the same one but the newer model. Enjoys it. Perfect laptop for the price.

I don't do anything heavy on it. Just usually email and web. However, I've done some Photoshop work and recorded some audio with it with several different programs. Runs them fine. No lag. Just wish it was dual core. It's only 2gb ram but I've gotten the CPU to max out way before the ram anyways. But like I said photoshop and some audio programs ran well.

I wouldn't game on it.
