I rooted!!! Is there a free wireless tether app?

yes, i tried Barnacle. the FAQ on the Barnacle website was actually where i found about the adhoc.

the Atrix will tether to the Nexus One when using the built in tethering app. the reverse also works... the Nexus One also tethers to the Atrix using the built in app although it seems to check with AT&T every time it starts up. it's also not reliable. meaning some times it will connect instantly, but other times it will just hang in the checking service.

I'm not saying it doesn't work. Barnacle and Wireless Tether both work fine when the client is a laptop. but when the client is a device that can't see an adhoc network, such as the Nexus. One, both of those programs doesn't work even though the built in tethering application still works.

Tether without Contract

I used the link above. You need to be rooted to do so and everything works and I checked on AT&T's site and my data usage shows that the phone was using internet at the times when I tethered trying it out. Works perfectly so far.

The regular APN addition showed the usage coming from wap.cingular and the rooted mods show the usage coming from "phone" so I'm not too worried about AT&T at this point.

I use the wireless tether app and like it a lot for occasional connectivity for my laptop and iPad. It didn't show up in the market until I put the device in airplane mode and connected to wifi. Apparently it's blocked when you are connected to AT&T's network and doesn't show up in the store

good stuff... haven't run into those apps that don't show yet, but i rather do that method vs. taking out the sim.

I'm starting to worry now as I just checked my usage stats and I have quite a few entries from wap.cingular which I'm guessing everyone who used the APN edit does as well. I wonder if AT&T will ever notice or even say anything about it?

people have been tethering using this same APN setup for years. i did it on my blackberry for the last 2 years. never had a problem.

Thanks for the info. was wondering why i can't find certain app.

" It didn't show up in the market until I put the device in airplane mode and connected to wifi. "
That would be most peculiar, and in theory, SHOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE. The entire purpose of airplane mode is to shut down all radios so that they absolutely cannot interfere with the aircraft systems. If you can enable Wifi while in airplane mode, there is something seriously wrong, as in dangerously wrong, with the programming of that telephone.

I'm not saying that a hundred itty bitty cell phones are ever going to crash an airplane (if it were that easy to bring one down with a 600mW phone, imagine what one 1000W microwave oven could do) just that the entire cell phone industry has decided "airplane mode" is an important safety feature. And if that feature isn't working...someone needs a headsup about it. FCC, FAA, NHTSA, and the manufacturer, to being with.

Just in case 153 of your good friends all light up at once, and actually DO confuse the avionics.

(Personally? If the aircraft are that fragile, I'd rather they just shut down the whole fleet. Period.)

Oh, it's possible, and is how I got to those hidden parts of the app store :) I don't disagree that I found it odd that I could enable wifi after entering airplane mode, but it was an effective way of finding apps like wifi tether so I'm glad it works this way

Oh, you enabled Wifi AFTER airplane mode. I was reading you to mean that you just used WiFi--that it hadn't been disabled by the airplane mode.

I guess it makes "flip a coin" sense, although I would have expected that iarplane mode should disable itself if any of the radios were turned on afterwards. After all..it is either in or out of airplane mode! Allowing the phone to run in a "neither fish nor fowl" mode sounds like someone didn't quite plan the programming. I wonder if that survives the first few OTA programming updates.<G>

Keep in mind that a lot of airlines are starting to have onboard wifi during the flight. So now you enable airplane mode during takeoff, then enable wifi once in the air.

You guys wondering about free tethering should really look into why carriers are so interested in locked bootloaders and punishing rooters all together. While I don't agree with such extreme measures, by getting one of their paid services free, you are in effect stealing from them. Whether you think its right or not, think of it this way. You can hack your cable to get the paid channels free, but you're stealing from the cable company.
