I joined this site looking for answers to many, many questions to android OS before I ever bought my first android device.
The help was over all very good if you overlook the one or two people who just have to live up to the rep of being "that guy".

I was very apprehensive about leaving iOS because I have a Mac, and everyone knows how well iOS, iCloud, and Mac OS integration can be.
I even thought about keeping the iPhone and carrying the android device as a 2nd. Something that I decided not to do in the end.

I ended up getting the LG Optimus G Pro over the HTC One and Samsung S4. I wanted a bigger screen in the 5" range, but I didn't care for the Samsung screen.
Samsung to this day doesn't understand what color white is or how to get it to render on their screen. So that left the HTC and LG.
The HTC at 4.7 was nice, great color etc but I really wanted that Bigger screen. After all, that was one of the main reasons I was wanting to try something other than iOS, I was tired of a 4" tiny screen.

I understand Apple's design choice using the 4" screen and wanting users to be able to use the iPhone one handed with ease. And, it works well for that.
I was worried the 5.5"screen would be too big, and it is, but OMG I am in LOVE the LG Optimus G Pro.

I had 80+ apps on my iPhone and I have found all of those there were important to me were in the Play store. I have seen some people say that the iOS app is sometimes more polished but in my 80 apps, I can't see much truth to that. Many of the apps are identical to the iOS version. Some are even better than the iOS version, some ARE 'not as good' (very very few are not as good).
One app that seems to be different is Facebook: on iOS if someone post a photo and I want it, I tap, it goes "full screen" and I long press and SAVE/COPY pops up. That doesn't happen on android and I can't seem to find a way to save any photo I want from there. Again, minor things.

The ONLY feature that BLOWS beyond belief on android is the lack of Visual Voicemail being a Native part of the OS. You have to download an app or something to take care of that.. I don't know, I don't get it. My 1999 Motorola razor has the same voicemail function as the 2013 Android OS. AT&T has an app you can use that gives you Visual Voicemail but it also takes your default messenger along with it. On some phones, that would be fine. On the LG Pro, it takes away from the Home button color indicator function that LG baked into the phone. For that feature to work, you must use the default messenger app. I hope that android fixes this MUST have feature soon. It's honestly the ONLY thing I can hate on when it comes to android OS.

I wanted to post my thoughts on android here because there are lots of people that are thinking of trying android that have never had anything but iPhone, just like me.
I want to say to those people: its not as scary as you think. Do I miss iCloud integration, ya. a little. The native email client that came on the LG Pro works with ALL of my different email clients, including me.com from Apple.
No VVM sucks, but other than that one sore spot. Android is pretty awesome. Jelly Bean OS fixed a lot and made the OS run very smoothly.

As far as the device. The LG Optimus G Pro is one of The most perfect phones on the market. No one would ever guess because it doesn't have samsung's billions to sink into bashing iPhone advertising. I don't root my phones but I thought I might want to try something like Nova launcher etc since you can add those, if you don't like them, delete and you are back to default GUI.
The LG needs NOTHING. This phone is So PERFECT out of the box. I haven't changed One thing. The screen is fricken amazing looking. The 5.5" takes maybe a day or two to master how to use and hold for max comfort. IMO, the LG owns the S4 but LG doesn't spend a billion dollar per phone to bash another device so it can feel better about itself. It doesn't need to.

Android OS has good and bad. It's no different that iOS when it comes to that. I am enjoying the new (to me) OS. It's Very different than iOS, but to learning the new OS is part of the fun.
It's a challenge to switch OS' but so far. I am enjoying it very much.

There is one part of android I will never embrace. Hating Apple and iOS/WP8 just because I like another OS, android. Anyone that thinks one is truly BETTER than the other is just fanboism.
Apple does some things WAY better than Android. Android does some things WAY better than iOS.
This constant bickering of my dad is better than your dad is the most ignorant, childish, blind thing I have ever witnessed.
It's like trying to fight about Ford mustang vs Chevy camero. Some like fords, some like chevy. I might prefer Chevy, but I still think the mustang is a good looking car.
Same as fighting over OSX vs Windows blah blah blah blah blah. You get the idea. You've heard it all by now.
I can't understand why people feel the need to feel superior because of their phone choice, computer OS choice or vehicle choice. Juvenile idiotic behavior is all I can get out of it.
Either way, my device is better than everyone else's. My car is better than your car. My clothes are better looking than yours. My TV has a better picture than yours.
My stereo sounds better than yours. My dad can beat up your dad. My house is bigger than your house.
Can you see how dam annoying that is?

Android, iOS, WP all kick *** in their own way. Learn to like more than one thing at a time and stop being a fanboi to a specific company that doesn't give a flying crap about you.

The VVM is a carrier thing. Some carriers include it, some don't. Not sure why. All my Sprint phones have come with VVM preinstalled.

I agree with your assessment that each platform has strengths and weaknesses. I don't really get the hate either, but I think some of it stems from the obnoxious smugness of some iPhone owners. :)

Anyway, coming from the iPhone you might find this useful: http://forums.androidcentral.com/general-help-how/137252-apple-users-guide-android.html

I didn't read all of your book, but get YouMail visual voice mail.

You make a lot of good points, and it's nice to hear how much you're enjoying your Optimus. I agree that fanboyism is on the whole toxic. It's great to be a fan of something, but to universally and irrationally pan everything else is just a sign of a small, closed mind.

As for your point about the lack of stock Visual Voicemail--I feel that stock apps tend to be fairly basic, and often inferior to other 3rd party apps, many of which are free. So I'm not particularly bothered by the lack of these kinds of stock apps, as long as some smart person out there is designing apps to fill the void.

And yeah, there are always going to be a few of "those guys" on any forum. What I've always liked about AC is that there seem to be way fewer of them here than on other forums.

Welcome to Android!

Your synopsis of Android is well thought out, respectful, and inviting for those who wish to see an informative viewpoint on another OS. I am sure I speak for many Android users, thank you for keeping an open mind in trying a new OS. I know a few Apple fans who won't even look at my Galaxy S3 just because it doesn't have a fruit picture on it.

I have not see the LG Optimus G Pro, But I have seen the G in Sprint, and I agree on the point that it seems like a wonderful device. If I was due for an upgrade, and I didn't have an inclination to get a Samsung, that would have been my second choice.

Nova launcher is a very good launcher and it brings custom to a whole new breed of awesome. I installed it about 9 months ago and haven't looked back. I continually update my backup of Nova just in case.

Again, welcome to Android. I really hope you like your device. Personally, I am glad that HTC and LG are picking up their game. It's nice to see good devices come from these companies, mainly because my point of view is if someone wants a smartphone, their choices shouldn't be Apple or Samsung.

B. Diddy I agree that there are a Lot of great, friendly people on these forums. Any of my friends that are interested in Apple to android switch will surely be directed here because I know they will get some good advice.

Android Central is one of the best android info sites I have found and I will tell others how great it is.

Welcome to the Android community.

Thank you for the honest and unbiased review. A lot of fair points made on androids strength and shortcomings. Also liked you comments about the app quality on both platforms being are on par it reaffirms my experience as well.

As for visual voice mail I use to love Google Talk far more than any carrier's solution but for some reason it has quit working for me.

Welcome to android central :-) the only way so far to save an image from facebook is to take a screen shot of it. It is best to double click the image to zoom in for full screen, and then click again to get rid of the comment/tag options along the bottom, from there, you can take the screen shot however your phone allows, and then crop the status bar by using your stock picture editor or a third party app. Not the most efficient of work arounds, but it gets the job done.
