I unrooted my phone then now its bricked! how is it possible?!

I unrooted my phone then checked to make sure it was really unrooted so i booted into custom recovery and said "wait a min i still have a recovery" i was confused so i downloaded an app called "root checker" and opened it. I hit "verify root access" it said my phone was unrooted. I opened a terminal and typed "su" it said su not found obviously my phone was unrooted. I did a factory reset via settings so that i could return my phone to VM and bam!

i didn't flash a stock recovery. thats what happened
