I wanna know your opinions about the notch.

Is the notch bad?

Face ID is the biggest reason why along with the fact that there is no chin at the bottom giving you that edge to edge display such devices are craving for. Face ID, being such an integral part of using the iPhone, gets used all the time and not have serves the purpose until Apple can completely move those sensors and camera behind the display.

If Google had the notch and no chin at the bottom like iPhones, I would appreciate them and totally applaud for coming out with a design where you target larger screen to body ratio like other manufacturers are doing.

That is a personal preference, I for one appreciate a little bottom bezel because of the way I hold my phone and if I can have front firing speakers so much the better. Aesthetics are in the eye of the beholder.

Heck if cameras and speakers could ever be put under a screen I would still like to have a little bottom bezel.

It's there. Haven't used a notched phone so honestly I doesn't bother me...yet. We'll see once I finally decide on if I'll get the XL.

Google Pixel notch is the worst notch ever. should get reward for the ugliest notch of 2018.
after so many months looking at other android OEM Google didn't learn anything?
if the price was £300 then we can forgive the big ugly notch. but the price tag is high aswell.
Google likes big chin also for some reason.

Google is 2 years behind. sorry to say.
OnePlus 6T = water drop notch
Google Pixel 3 XL = Atlantic Ocean notch

It's actually usage more than personal preference. The amount of users who will use Face ID than users who use front facing speakers will be always higher and unlocking your phone is so essential part of using your phone. So it's a big piece.

Because Apple forces you to use it. The fingerprint scanner on the back of the phone is much better in my opinion. Just like you have your opinion.

That's a whole different discussion altogether but I can tell you after using Face ID for over a year that it's so much easier and better than FPS. YMMV, but let's not hijack this thread :)

Could you agree that the notch on the X and Pixel 3 XL use the same amount of space just that one is wider and one is deeper?

Don't like it, but it's not the reason I'm not getting a Pixel. I'm not a big fan of stock Android, and I hope Samsung stays away from the notch, their curved screens are bad enough.

Notch in the Xs Max and Xs are not as deep as in the 3 XL and the display actually has larger screen to body ratio as a result of it. That is not the case with 3 XL.

That doesn't answer my question. Do the notches take up the same space in different ways?

I pretty much have used all the flagships with notches and ones without, currently have Xs Max. I don't get people justifying iPhone notch because of face id. They could have still had the fully horizontal black bar at the top with true depth camera instead of the notch. I don't care about the notch and never bothered me on X or Xs Max and it's not going to bother me Pixel 3 XL after playing with it at Best buy.

Sure the iPhone doesn't have bottom bezel but let's leave that aside and we are only talking about top bezel. Apple could have done away with the notch by having a bezel at top and same applies to Google or other OEMs. Atleast some Android OEMs give option to black out the top bezel.
Either way for me personally I don't mind the notch but never understand the argument some people make iPhone notch has purpose and Android notch doesn't have purpose. Sorry but both on iPhone and Android there isn't any purpose, they both choose to put the notch and can achieve whatever they are do doing (face id, fancy multiple selfie camera, speakers) without a notch.

How to disable the notch in Google Pixel 3 XL?

Google is trying to implement the notch as a futuristic design butt the notch is too hefty that after using the Oppo FIND X and iPhone X S Max, I cannot adjust myself to the huge notches on both sides or the big cutout whole watching videos.

I use a mostly black background and won't even notice it. I'll appreciate the notifications being used in that space.

Agreed, great design decision to maximize display space while providing a must for any phone; front firing speakers.

Google Notch don't have high end tech, so there's no reason to be so big.
iPhone Notch has high end tech build in that's the reason why it's big..

also don't forget the Google big chin

@digitalbreak Already explain it better then me, read it before commenting again

Google has all the sensors and a speaker in the notch so your post is misleading

iPhone projecting a grid of infrared dots on your face to scan...you need LOT OF high end tech to do that.

Google only has speaker and two camera's which don't make sense to have a big notch

for example Huawei P20 Pro also has dual stereo speakers but has small notch

Proximity sensor is also there and it makes perfect sense to me

Let us differentiate standard components from components that are new and offering new experiences. Proximity sensor is something you always include and design for, so yea, there is nothing special about that piece of hardware.

What Google failed is to give a reason for notch. Even with this full screen as they say (which is not), screen to body ratio is just 82.8% while rest of the market has a larger screen to body ratio. This makes it a huge phone for sure but nothing applaudable. Even S9+ without a notch has a 83.9% screen to body ratio. Even OnePlus 6 has a 83.81% screen to body ratio.

So yea, the 3 XL notch doesn’t really bode well when you compare how well other manufacturers use it for what they claim - providing more screen real estate. That is why this design is questionable.

Again, it’s not about the existence of the notch itself, it’s the notch design and it’s use.
