I want to root my phone

Question for BMW...

Did you root your Dinc using the step by step posted by DroidXcon?
I noticed that his post was under the Samsung Fascinate category, does this make a difference if you use these instructions to root a droid incredible?

This is my first post here and appreciate all the advice I've read on the site so far... I plan on rooting my Dinc running 2.2 with those instructions, but not without reading as much as possible first, as this would be my first time rooting.

I go back and forth on rooting myself. Sometimes I really want to root and but CyanogenMod on there and sometimes Im like screw it I'll just leave it unrooted and keep using LauncherPro. Not sure if I will ever actually pull the trigger lol.

Rooting isn't terribly difficult on the Dinc. You use a program called UnrEVOked to do it.

I used this tutorial to do it:

Root Your Droid Incredible! (AMOLED & SLCD) | JonSuh.com

It has step-by-step instructions and links to the files you'll need (unrEVOked and the hboot drivers if you're running Windows).

Alternatively, you can have Upstreammiami do it.

Those steps will not work on a Droid Incredible. Not only are they different model phones, but they're from different manufacturers. Therefore the security in them is different, as different manufacturers go about it in different ways. Plus, they're running different software (Fascinate runs Android 2.1 with touchwiz on top, Incredible runs Android 2.2 with HTC Sense on top).

I believe you can use the Z4Root app to get permanent root on the Fascinate, but that will only get you temporary root on the Incredible (meaning everything will revert to the way it was before when you reboot the phone).

Thanks for the tutorial link. My biggest back and forth has been if I want to run a custom rom or not. There is nothing I am terribly unhappy with and the biggest thing I would like to improve is battery life, although I tend to make it through the day most days.

The only way you really know if your going to like custom ROMs is to flash a few of them. Its very easy, the hardest part is setting up you screens and apps again. If you use a backup program that takes care of the apps and your just left with the screens and some settings. And like Upstream posted above as long as you start with having a backup you should have no worries.

I know I have seen links to full walkthrough of root to installing Roms. Can someone link one? Rooting seems easy enough but I want to be sure I know how to do the various backups so I can always go back. If I have a step by step guide I'd be comfortable trying it.

What are the pro and cons if any of Cyanogen? Seems like the overall favorite rom. Is there something that would come as a big surprise to me if I went that route?

I just rooted last night and flashed CM6.1 over. It's really very easy and opens it up. On a side note, does anyone know if there's a stable gingerbread ROM out yet? I'm either blind or not looking in the right places, lol.

I just mean it allows you to get rid of the VZW crapware. I never used any of it and vanilla android is nice, although Sense does have it's advantages

Once rooted you can get rid of all the crapware, dont need a custom ROM to do that. Most devs will get rid a lot of that nonsense but you can do it yourself too pretty easily in adb or using TiBackup.

i rooted using unrevoked and it was simple. im thinking about flashing a rom but im still trying to find the right guide to do so. i have found some tutorials but they sometimes contradict each other and i dont wanna screw up.

also, what is a kernal exactly and what does it do?

i did read once that you can have stock sense for 2.2 and just use a different kernal to get better performance; i would like to use launcher pro or adw launcher but it kills my battery i have a 1500 mAh in there and with my usage, and task killer im never out of juice when im on the go.

MOre times than less there are instructions on the first page of a ROM thread. Generally you always want to do a nandroid as well as an app backup prior to loading any new ROM. When you are ready do a wipe, wipe cache and dalvik, then install ROM in recovery and then reboot and setup device.

Its pretty easy. You can learn more about kernels by doing a quick search but custom kernels have been reworked to either offer faster performance or better performance and help increase battery life. Remove the task killer, you dont need it. It will just do more harm than good.

thanks for the reply,

i'll keep reading up before i get the courage to do that. i rooted just to get the wireless tethering but if there is more i can do i wanna.

the task killer that i use works great!!! without it my battery life is crap with it i have no problems. i dont set anything to auto kill etc. i just go in it to close apps that wont go down or if i forget to back all the way out of then i kill them. i tried the free on and i liked it so i bought the paid one for 1.00

In addition to the reading on ROMS, kernels, etc. I would also recommend you read up on task killers.

It's funny I have always thought that if I root I would use cyanogen mod but it seems a lot of DInc users are using other Roms. I'm going to have to do some reading to compare all the options. I'm going to probably just root tonight and get that over with then wait on loading a rom.

Go for it its lots of fun to try out different ROMs then tweak them with different themes as well as mods. I just loaded CM7 and i am really enjoying it. Spent the past few hours setting everything up as well as loading up ADW and Beautiful Widgets and others.

I have only ran Sense ROMs to date, but thought I would give vanilla a shot especially with Gingerbread.
