I want to sync ONLY my mobile bookmarks from my old android phone to my new phone. I DO NOT want to sync my desktop bookmarks to my phone and vice versa! I think this "sync everything across all devices" is mostly INSANE - I use my desktop machines for VASTLY different uses and sites than my mobile. I looked for instructions online to no avail.

Completely depends on what browser you are using. For example, in Chrome, it's not saving the bookmarks in separate places. All your bookmarks are saved in one place and just separated by folders. If you want to keep bookmarks on your phone separate from bookmarks on your PC, then use a different browser on the phone that does not sync to the PC.

Or export the booknarks to a file (usually an http file), and import them in the browser in the new phone from the same file.
