I9300I Galaxy S3 Neo failed due to "water damage"

I have a Samsung SIII Neo+ I9300I which has failed due to water damage, according to the dealer I have taken it to. I was on holiday in Thailand when it failed. It did not come into direct contact with water but was it a sturdy waterproof bag when it rained. It is the rainy season so humidity is very high which is what I suspect has damaged the phone.
Is this a known problem for these phones? It does not seem very well sealed compared to other smartphones. Is there anyway it can be fixed short of paying to get it replaced?
