ICS on Galaxy Tab 8.9

I am thiking we won't see anything at LEAST until the v2 tablets are released. They are probably thinking of the bottom line and who would want to get a new tablet when they could use the old one w/ same OS

Honestly speaking I think Samsung screwed up on the g tab 2's. Spec wise, there's not much difference. Looking at the specs from the competitors on the new tablets coming out, samsung would be smart to hols back on the Gtab 2's and up the hardware. Maybe give an early taste of Jelly bean and let ICS roll out for all the other devices capable of handling the ICS OS.

I've been enjoying ICS on my tab now for a whole week and it's been a delight. I got up the courage to root/flash etc. and the process wasn't so bad. It's been real solid.

AOKP M5 rom
ADW Ex launcher
Minimalistic text (widgets)

What I have yet to learn is how to back everything up so that if I try a different rom or go back to stock, I won't have to start fresh on all my games for example. I've installed Titanium backup but that's as far as I've gone.

I wish I could find one place that gives me step by step to rooting and/or a single guide from beginning to end on how to install ICS. All the linking to threads and downloads is like going down a rabbit hole.

This is so true and why I shied away from taking this route before and why I will never try rooting my sensation because there's a lot more involved for an HTC device.

But I was able to do this using only 2 threads. I wish I could explain to you the process in my own words but I can't. I really don't know how I did it without any missteps myself. But this one thread is pretty thorough and includes all the files you need in one package (I liked that)... except for the actual rom of your choice. For the rom I chose this thread and you'll find the rom file there of course along with any special instructions. This is probably where it gets daunting because there are hundreds of threads for different roms and different versions of the same rom and it's like, wth?! But from what I gather you just kinda pick one and so I did...picked one that had a fresh update and good reviews. Some roms like this one do not have the basic google apps preinstalled so a zip is also provided there for these apps and you install (flash) it right after the rom.

I'm not trying to convince you to go for it, just saying I felt like you did always looking for that one perfect resource for everything...but after reading and rereading those threads I felt comfortable enough in giving it a shot. Thankfully it all went smooth because as I mentioned in my previous post, I still don't fully understand how to back up my stuff or how to go back to stock, etc. The info is all there but I'm avoiding it kinda like I avoided learning how to root/flash in the first place. :-\

I'm rooted (because that was easy), but I'm still waiting for the official roll-out of ICS. I guess I'm content with 3.2 for now. Still would like Samsung to hurry the crap up.

There is a developement community that already has ICS ports for the 8.9. Even without a working camera or HDMI out the ICS ports are blazing fast. Honeycomb is a nightmare in comparison

For the tegra 2 7310 and 7300
Galaxy Tab 8.9 Android Development - xda-developers
For the AT&T i957
Galaxy Tab 8.9 SGH-i957 Android Development - xda-developers

I have my g tab 8.9 rooted with the ics from listed. Some minor tweaks need to be made aside from the working camera. Other than that I love the rom. Still waiting for some sort of legit timetable on an official release.

Well, I finally found a How-To guide for rooting, recovery, backup and all things GTab 8.9. It even has a link to all the files that you need. So I'm backing up (nandroid?) right now so that I can go back to all my apps WITH data if I don't like the ICS build.
The thread on xda is: [GUIDE & TOOLKIT] General Guide for 7300/7310 - xda-developers

But has anyone gotten the supposed ICS update that Canada was supposed to get? Did I read that announcement wrong?

Man I forgot to thank you for this!:D

You're welcome! Glad to be of help.

Yeah I lost my application data (mostly my progress in games) but I'll pay more attention to backing it up next time. Well I do remember doing a backup come to think of it, it just wasn't obvious to me when to restore it  idk

It doesn't seem obvious in the guide, but the Nandroid saves the backup on the device. My assumption is to grab it and store it elsewhere, then put it back and use the restore function in Clockwork recovery to put all you stuff back on.

I have a bunch of apps and there settings I don't want to lose.

Not necessarily. A backup in clockwork it like a snapshot. It backs up everything at that moment in time. Your entire ROM up until that point. If you restore a backup what you are using now goes away and the tablet goes completely back to that snapshot

A Backup and a restore will not affect your sd card or your virtual sd card. So don't have to worry about your pictures or music etc. It will however erase all of your apps

If you want to bring over your apps and your app data then I recommend using titanium backup

Heavy sigh, not yet. Samsung has lost my business over this. My next tablet and phone will definitely be Nexus devices

Anyone here of any new updates for the g tab?

Nothing. I'm still waiting patiently for official ICS. I just want my camera back lol

Same here. Missing my camera but living the features of ics. Minus the bugs but its better than honeycomb.

Looks like Samsung is deliberately delaying ICS port to older tabs, they probably want to sell new tab 2's only. Poor performance, Samsung.
