ICS OTA Warning

I just installed the ICS OTA on a completely stock Rezound. I want to root, but your warning made me pause. Do you expect a problem if I try to root? Thanks.

It works if you use HTC Unlock + Amon Ra in Recovery + SuperSU as described here:

http://www.droidforums.net/forum/htc-rezound-general-discussions/216543-rooting-ics-leak.html

Perhaps I should back up a bit. I had a GB Rezound and loaded Amon Ra + the "Superuser" program, then upgraded via OTA with S-ON, unlocked, rooted. This actually worked fine but my fastboot screen now has the dreaded "TAMPERED UNLOCKED" display. However I am on ICS with 4.0.3 and root. The Superuser program does *not* work with ICS when rooted via AmonRa as I just said, you have to flash with SuperSU.

Overall I find ICS to be painful to configure and power-hungry. I now want to try S-OFF and a custom ROM, and maybe revert back to GB, but I will wait for the dust to settle for a few weeks before I do this. If you are happy with GB you may want to stick with it for a while.

I have read nothing about bricked phones running aosp. There is quite a few problems, but it's all beta software right now. Also, CM9 is not officially supported, but DMeadows is getting it going for us, as well as AOKP.

If your not stock, your going to have to wipe your phone no matter what to get current, so why not just relock and run the ruu, it's the easiest way?

Edit: I've never installed su, I always just flash a rom with it. There are stock roms that are just rooted, and pretty much nothing else, why not flash one of those? I must be missing something on just rooting the stock rom, and not doing anything else.

I don't get the lack of CM love for the Rezound as it was a major release with damn good hardware specs. Only those developers will ever know the real reason.

Part of me is frustrated that I'm going to have to relearn the lingo and how-to's all over again. I was heavy into the modding bit back in January when the Rezound was permarooted, but haven't messed around with that stuff since. From what you're saying, is it as easy as a one-click to unroot and using CWM to perform a complete reset?

I'll have to relearn how to use CWM and all that. I've put off the OTA until 8/7, but I don't think a few days will make a difference in terms of AOSP/AOKP/CM9 issues getting squared away. I kinda want to say screw it and go all into the betas and just take my chances as I do have double insurance on my phone (Best Buy's black-tie protection for bricking and Asurion with my carrier for loss or theft).

I need to hit up XDA and research all this real hard for the next few days.

So...I am S-On, running the .10 leak, unlocked, and rooted...will the update even push to my phone?

Chad was trying to improve on his ril fix and somehow he bricked his phone. A couple of others did the same before he could pull the link. He doesn't know how it bricked but he has his replacement already. Other than those few no bricks have been reported

I was running the .10 leak, unlocked with S-On and rooted. I did Fastboot OEM Lock than used the PH98IMG method to install the .12 RUU. One thing I didn't remember is that you have to flash the RUU twice. It will go through the whole update process and say update complete. The phone will reboot itself into Hboot and begin loading the IMG again. Let it do this a 2nd time. After the 2nd time it will say "Update Complete. Press power to reboot". It then booted up and I am on .12 with no issues. This will wipe all data so back up if you want to keep stuff. It did not touch my external SD card though. Also, I lost root which sucks. Working on getting it back now.

How do I flash if the device is locked, though? Is there a guide for this?
Same way, just without the rest locking part. Rename it. Put it in root of ext sd. Reboot to bootloader. Let it flash. Reboot to bootloader again. Let it flash again. Reboot and have fun

Can I just flash the ota leak over the .5 leak?

The ICS OTA is 3.14.605.12. The bootloader, radios and kernel are the same as the last leak, 3.14.605.10. Some of the bloatware and apps are updated, otherwise, if you are on anything based on the 5/7 leak, no need to waste your time.

You won't even GET the OTA unless you are locked (or relocked) on a stock ROM. You CAN still get S-OFF and unlock and root after the OTA.

I understand MrSmith's caution, however there is no cause for alarm.

Dumped down the innertubes from my Arnova 10 G2.

I just got a pre-ICS OTA update, and have the HTC unlock, Amon Ra 3.13 and Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper. I let it install, and it installed in Ra. Voodoo fixed up most issues, TB said there was something still not right and it could fix it. Everything seems to be fine now, and when I boot into recovery Ra still comes up.

It literally just now offered me ICS, I hit "reject" so that I can research further. I've seen references to updated Ra, for example.

Thanks for this post, it just saved me a bunch of research, I'm going to stick with GB.

My OTA was corrupted by the fact that I was rooted when it installed and had a bunch of frozen apps.

I had to download the RUU, re-lock, and re-install. Once I did this I got a good ICS experience. I also got rid of HTC Sense in favor of Go Launcher EX.

I used the RUU torrent from this thread:

http://androidforums.com/rezound-all-things-root/593887-ota-update.html

I don't trust the OTA at all. You really have to take a "clean slate" approach to this upgrade.

(Edit: When I say I don't trust the OTA, I mean don't do it over the air. You have to download, relock, flash, unlock, root, then re-install all your apps and configure everything as if it were a brand new phone. Nothing else is reliable IMHO.)

My version is 3.14.605.5 71ORD

I am having issues with google maps rebooting the phone. Any suggestions of what to do?

Google maps is messed up for a lot of HTC phones at the moment, all you can do is uninstall the updates from google maps and turn off automatic updates until they put out a fix. I think the broken update is from aug. 16, so wait on that one to change.
