ICS ROMs sluggish

Am I the only one who thinks that these ICS ROMs are sluggish? I realize that these are WIPs and that the official release isn't out yet, but I have to ask because of all the posts on AC and xda describing how zippy these ROMs are.

I left pool party and flashed AOSP's ROM and felt it was slow. I tried koush's ROM, and it was slow as well. Went back to pool party and it was so much faster.

anyway....just wondering.

Yep, they are quite laggy even with tweaking and overclocking, compared to CM7 gingerbread.

I would take comments on the boards with a large grain of salt. Many of them are along the lines of "Great, the best, except features X, Y, Z don't work. But this is still incredible!"

I'll call a duck a duck 100 percent of the time.

Considering this is like you said a work in progress and an Alpha release, I have been EXTREMELY happy with oICSv13. Overall yes, it's quick but no it's not anywhere near as smooth or consistent as Oxygen was that I flashed over from.

In fact today, I was starting to get some regular lag and I bumped the Dalvik cahce up to 32 from 28 (i think it was) and that helped immensely.

Besides, I came from a Palm Pre so I know aaaaaaaaaaaaaall about real lag.

Funny, over on XDA they were arguing that the Dalvik cache should be *decreased*. When I went from 48 (default) to 28, the lag got better. ???

They are laggy... It should improve once official NS4G build is out... These are all built off source for the Galaxy Nexus...

Yeah that's why I lowered mine in the first place but it just wasn't working on my particular phone in the long run. It may very well end up slowing down again tomorrow. We'll see.

It is great you guys put up this thread. It seems like nobody prior to this had the guts to say the truth.

I think the ICS Roms are great, but not "Smooth as butter" as I constantly read in ALL of the ICS threads. After all, it's not even the "real" hardware acceleration that we'll see as far as the Drivers go. We'll see the full hardware acceleration in the NS4G Official release.

I agree..it's just not as smooth as the Gingerbread ROMS. When I first boot up a fresh ICS install, all will seem super smooth because of the driver/acceleration, but then at some point it seems the lag catches up with the phone and slows it down to a near halt at times.

I've tried many different builds of MIUI..and even that.. at first will seemingly run ridiculously smooth, but then I'll get a few lockups per day.

Try the newest franco kernel - it adds some serious speed to ICS. I'm using smartassV2 and live oc of 105, and my kang is absolutely flying.

Agreed. It's only been a few hours but it's great so far.

Not to be a party pooper. But my rom by aosp is running very snappy and smooth.Going on my fouth day .

I'm running the same and as it's the snappiest I've found: side by side with my stock Nexus it's got BIG lag.

But nothing that shouldn't be expected on a port....

I'm going to be a party pooper and agree. Mine is running pretty well and smooth. I'm not sure why there is a thread on this, this ROM was built from source, of course it's not going to optimized 100% for any phone other than the Galaxy Nexus. It's silly to think it would be otherwise.

Sure some things aren't working, but hey why are you complaining? Some people can't even run gingerbread on their phones.

I think the OP was wondering if he was doing something wrong with his ICS installation since it doesn't match all the raves about speed that get posted. There is nothing wrong in pointing out that compared to even stock GB, alpha-ICS is noticeably laggy even with all the tweaks.

It is not a knock against the ROM's or the developers - just injecting a dose of realism.

mine was lagging pretty bad (oICSv13) but i turned OFF the TCP Optimization and 3G speed cap hacks and it seemed to speed up...maybe it's placebo but it's been running better for most of the day.

those settings are in PropModder included with oICSv13

Last time I checked, this was a "discussion" forum, not an "agreement" forum. Why is there a forum for anything if not to discuss something?

So, yeah, I think my post is valid.

It is not a knock on any developer at all; I think I've been pretty consistent in this forum as well as others complementing the developers for their hard work and trying out their ROMs and kernels, all of which were put out gratis. I did recognize that they were WIPs; sorry you didn't notice.

I think it's reasonable to simply post something out there since my experience was very different from what I was reading. Query: what might I be doing differently? (I could have posted: "My ICS is slow; these ROMS suck!" Your response would have been justified.)

But, hey, it's a discussion. I simply wanted to know if I was the only one out there who wasn't raving about the ICS ROMs.

In my experience I wouldn't describe it as lag, it's just simply slower. As to be expected of course.
Lets be thankful the ports are this good for us compared to other devices :)

Besides, its just another reason to look forward to official ICS

Don't even worry about it.

Some of these posts are completely missing the point. Yes, the ICS ROMS are awesome, incredible, totally insane! The devs rule!

Are they slower and laggy than even the stock GB ROM? Yes they are- quite noticeably. Is that expected for alphas, WIF's? Yes it is.

You can do all the tweaks you want (yes, I have done the TCP optimization and 3G cap thing). At the moment, the ICS ROMS (all of the them) are slower than any GB. Yes, we know it's because we don't have the NS4G code. Yes we know it is alpha. Yes we know ICS (pick your ROM) is the the greatest, and awesome, and totally beyond expectations.

They are still laggier than *any* GB ROM. That's all I'm saying; it is a fact. No one is knocking the devs, or the ICS ROM's.

Yeah I'm going to agree that no amount of tweaks or custom kernels is going to give you the kind of performance you're going to see on the established GB roms, and I'm totally OK with that. I use these early ICS Roms because they are good enough for my daily use. If performance is your expectation then custom ICS ROMs aren't there yet and won't be for a while after an official update for the NS4G is released.

I'll echo what other have and say that I think the dev's that are pulling off even these ROMs are awesome and I know I appreciate their efforts.

Very true.
