Im still debating whether I want to root or not. I do not feel comfortable.. however i am very tech savey and feel like i could figure it out.

What happens when froyo 2.2 comes out and im rooted?

Just follow the instructions in the sticky on how to root; it's fool proof for the most part. I was hesitant as well, but didn't have any issues.

When 2.2 is finally released for us, I'm going to put all the bloatware back, then unroot. Install the update, and wait and see if anything changes as far as how to root goes. Then I'll root again.

if you really want the OTA, you'll need a stock system (easiest way is to use odin to flash back to stock)

if you haven't removed anything and are just rooted, it might work, but you'll just lose root

at the rate samsung/verizon is going with releasing an update, it'll be 2050 before we get one.

To Root = Enable your phone so that the root (administrator) access is available to you or any applications that you may install.
- From what I've read, rooting (by itself) does not cause your phone to be able to accept future updates. It simply allows you to do "more" than you can out of the box.

Beyond Root = Once you move into the realm of modifying system files, removing Stock applications, etc.. then this is where it becomes tricky when VzW releases an OTA update.
- I've read that when OTA updates were released for other phones, the users that modified system files and pre-installed Apps were basically denied the update (ie: the update required certain files and check-sums to exist for the update to be allowed). Thus, those users had to revert to stock phones in order for the OTA update to be successful.

In short.. the act of Rooting is VERY easy, and is very trivial for future updates.. More than likely, the update will go through .. and you may have to re-root your phone to continue benefiting from what "rooting" provides.

If I were to unbox my Fascinate today... the process I would perform would be..

1. Root Phone (How to Root)

2. Install Clockwork Recovery (Clockwork Recovery Instructions) (post #3)

3. Take a backup
- Power off phone.
- Hold Volume Up AND Volume Down (keep holding)
- Press Power, until you see Samsung logo.. Release Power
- You'll then see the stock Recovery screen.
- Use Volume Down to select the "update.zip", then tap on the HOME softkey to accept.
- This should load CWMRecovery.
- Use Volume Down to select Backup/Restore.
- Use Power key to select.
- Then select Backup, and hit power key again.

You now have a backup, which can be used to recover to this exact point if you ever screw anything up.

From this point forward, you can do so much stuff:

-- Remove Stock apps

-- Install a Different ROM; JT's Super clean;
---- This ROM already has all VzW Stock apps removed. It also has all Bing removed by default.
---- Loading this ROM (or any) means you'll need to Wipe all Data (customizations and apps) from your phone. Be ready to spend a couple of hours reinstalling everything and getting it all setup the way you like.

How far you go is based upon your own needs, and wants..

It's VERY safe to perform steps 1-3 above.. then it becomes a bit more tricky to ensure you're doing the rest of it safely. But, as long as you know how to boot into Recovery and Take/Restore a backup.. then you should be fine.

since im hopeingggg froyo comes out this month.. maybe it would b smarter to root after it comes out

that was what i thought. and then i just couldn't take it anymore. so i rooted. and i am glad i did. at least now i know what i am doing when froyo comes out so i can do it more smoothly then. it was worth it just for the learning experience. oh, and my phone works the way it was supposed to.

i couldn't wait another month for verizon to fix their brokenness.

If Froyo was going to come out tomorrow, I'd still root the phone today. The stock user experience is so horrid compared to how it'll perform once debloated, it wouldn't be worth living with for even a day.

But like others have said, rooting most likely won't prevent OTA updates, but debloating and/or flashing new roms will. And if you're not debloating or flashing new roms, there's really not much point to rooting. For the most part, rooting just allows you to make all these other changes... by itself, it doesn't do much.

There will be plenty of instructions as everyone and their dog is waiting on it. I've tried quite a few roms/kernels and was still able to go back to stock without issues.

I don't see the point in waiting. The faster you get into all this stuff the more your gonna learn and realize that your wait was all for nothing.

if we get froyo before the end of the month, i'll eat a cat.

I almost spit out my drink LOL. Holding you to this but highly doubt you will have to do it.
I rooted just to see what it was all about, just debloated and deblinged. I'm thinking everyone will have gingerbread before we get froyo.....

OK I've decided to root and debloat tomorrow. if it's not to hard can someone supply me with the links I will need? I plan on using a Mac

Once your rooted look for the Clockwork mod and install that. Then download ROM Manager from the market and use it to get JT's Super Clean ROM. That ROM does all the debloating for you and it reduces lag tremendously.
All bing will be google.

That will be a good starting point if your interested in more. As far as Mac goes, I don't know sorry.
