If this is a Nexus, where is 4.0.4?

I'll just come out and say it: I can't root my Nexus. Followed the instructions for the 1 click root and kept running into issues with step 2 because it didn't detect the device.
I'm probably the only one who can't get it Lol....

I had the same issue, but it's a usb issue you have to fix. It should give instructions.

It's the drivers (the Wug's toolkit). You have to manually point them to where they need to go.

Windows = PITA lol

Its still faster than you'll get bug fixes from any manufacturer. It also had an update the day of release, so your point is moot.

Not only that but for the longest time the VZW version was the most up to date.

I think that VZW is purposely and willfully slow.

Or maybe Google just isn't done yet smh. Folks just like to blame VZW while Google gets a free pass. I wish all the complainers would just leave Verizon and go to ATT, Tmobile, or Sprint. I mean I've never seen people with the best service in the country complain so much. Just leave, and go to a carrier who handles updates better. You know like umm........

Guys I think we will be lucky to get 2 updates before the next nexus is released...just my thoughts....this phone is not a top priority for Verizon, we saw this since day 1.

A couple of newbie questions:

1. my GN is stock and I was curious if I have to actually root the phone to get these alternate updates or do I just have to unlock it?

2. I know when I do these things it will erase my phone so I was curious if doing a backup will save everything like even my pictures that I have for people's phone numbers.

This is better served for the correct forum, however you do need root and contacts are saved via Google or Verizon. I use Google because it resyncs amazingly well.

Just transfer your photos to a computer or drop box. When unlocking your SD card is wiped. Once unlocked it will not wipe again unless you relock and take it back to stock.

The Nexus is a tremendously powerful device once rooted. I understand concerns regarding the process and the fact you shouldn't "need" to root, however that does not remove the fact that this thing transforms into pure awesome.

Actually no, you do not need to root, you just need to unlock. The recovery tool that you use to flash the unofficial update (clockworkmod) can be flashed to the phones RAM from the computer. IT's a longer process, but doesnt require rooting. That's how I updated my phone.

If you are talking about different ROM's, however, I'm not totally sure if you can do it without rooting, but I would imagine rooting would make the process easier.

I should have clarified, but with roms you need root as far as I know while installing the leaked ota you do not, particularly since you would lose root anyway.

I see no advantages whatsoever to not rooting considering it can be so easily undone. That and the sheer simplicity of processes for this device makes other phones look like Nazi gold vaults.

Further, it will simplify the process down the line if you choose to go for a custom rom. If you're worried about legal issues, be rest assured, you already potentially crossed that path with unlocking ;)

Why is the sky blue?

Nobody knows what's going on, other than speculation based on highly incomplete information with dubious sourcing. Anyone claiming otherwise is living in fantasy land IMHO.

If you want quick updates (which were never promised by Google or Verizon, just fans of Google/Verizon), I would suggest taking the situation into your own hands.

Couldnt agree more.

Did anyone ever figure out if the signal gets better with this update?

the signal won't be better unless the radios get updated. this doesn't happen with the released source code.

It did in the leak a while back?
the 4.0.4 leak did include new radios, which did help signal a bit.

4.0.4 also DISPLAYS signal differently. so it appears to give better signal, wether that is in fact true or not...i doubt it. but i am getting a solid 2 bars of 4g where before i would get Zero to 1 bar 4g....so at the very least, it makes me feel slightly better about my signal...even if it is just a picture lying to me ;)

I hear ya. I had the misfortune of having to flash back and forth, and I will say this--while it displays differently, the transition between WiFi and 4G seems much improved.
