I'm confused on which root process to use.

I'm sure this has been beaten to death, so I am sorry, but I am so confused now after reading thread after thread on this.

I have not done any of the OTA updates. I have the original unrevoked, which I have been happy with to get wireless tether.

But now I want to start messing with some of custom roms that are now out.

So which method should I use? Do I need to do the OTA first and then which root method? Or should I not do the OTA and if so which root method?

Are there pros and cons to doing the OTA before I root?

Thanks for your patience and help.

ya, go with that simple root. once you flash a custom rom youll probably see a huge increase in the battery. i remember my battery was horrible before the ota.

Before loading a custom rom download rom manager from the market and flash the recovery. Then use the program to install roms from your sd card.

There are a bunch of good roms out there, toast has a sticky listing most of them with included download sites

If you still have the pre OTA rom, with unrevoked, download Titanium backup. And back up your apps, and if you will be switching to a 2.1 rom, go ahead and use the back up "all user apps + data" command in batch mode.

If your going to a 2.2 rom be careful as not everything is 1 for 1....

Personal commendation, back up just the apps. Root, install rom manager, and flash CM6. Then restore your apps.

*Make sure you download and install the gapps before restoring your own apps.*

yea AC did a front page on it.

goggle apps aren't technically open source. So he doesn't include them.

Ahhhh yea i remember that post...

And makes complete sense to me...

I commend him on his efforts and moral judgement

So I am also totally confused. I have read tons on rooting and I'm not sure which method to use for the newest ota. I want full root so I can run Cyanogen. Can anyone show a link to the newest rooting method?

So, I tried simpleroot2 and I have the wrong hboot. I am trying to get the right one but was so confused on how to access adb. Now that I think I got that figured out every time I type a command it says adb: permission denied. I've tried everything I can think of. I'm so confused and frustrated.

Oh no. I think you missed a step. You have to do EVERYTHING it says and not miss anything. It took me a couple tries to get it right. Simple Root should change the HBOOT (that's the point of the program) for you. If you do it right.

That is what I tried but it was confusing how to start simple root. I thought i put the PC36IMG on my sd then reboot the phone with Vol Down and power and i did that and it found it and there was a status bar then after that was done it just showed options for fast boot, recovery, stuff like that. it didnt start the fastroot so i looked back at that howto and it said "
Note: This process will only work if you already have the engineering HBOOT. (If you have NAND unlocked, you already have it and can proceed confidently.) If you'd like to check the actual version, you can boot into HBOOT and look near the top of the screen: it should say HBOOT-0.76.2000, not 0.79.0000. If you have 0.79.0000, you will need to do Toast's Part 2 first before starting here." so i thought i had to try toast's method to change the hboot but i cant do anything in adb. thats where i got confused.

You also don't have to do the second part of that post. You only need to do the simple root one. After that you can follow the instructions for your preferred ROM on how to flash it. Each one is a little different.
