Are you using a different voicemail option (like Google Voice, or Verizon Messenger)? Or an alternate phone dialer?

Good point. The 'Messages' app is what opens when I tap on a notification in the status bar. I just discovered that there are app settings in the left soft button. Deselected notifications there and I'll bet the phone returns to default notices.
