IM NEW: Current Android OS and 4g Questions?

Im new to Android.. and just got the htc evo and seidio extended battery. So I have 2.2 installed.. is this the newest and is there anything new coming out? Also, how much more does 4g run down battery?

2.3 (Gingerbread) will be update to EVO's in late June per Unwired View.com

4g uses alot of battery. When not in use, turn it off. Also turn off the 4g service notification option.
